A gorgeous, global must-have for socially-conscious parents and educators
As a parent to two young children, I want to instill in them that the world is a big place and that their experience in life can greatly differ than other children’s experiences around this country and in this world. In the news, I see and can feel an air of fear that can drive people to not understand the importance of diversity and not realize that we are all interconnected on earth although each one of us is our own unique person. Our children are tomorrow’s global citizens and while it is important to understand how their lives are different from other children’s, it is also just as important to know that there are many, many ways we are all alike as humans. I want to read books to them that ignite their curiosity about different cultures and that there are a wide range of shapes, sizes, races, abilities and lifestyles from countries and cultures all over the world.
“. . . Children takes its readers on a visual trek across the globe, where they discover that —
despite our different clothes and homes and languages — we are more alike than different”
— Caryl Stern, President & CEO, U.S. Fund for UNICEF
The Barefoot Book of Children is a beautiful book that has hand-painted illustrations and straightforward text that help children understand today’s critical social issues. We want our children to celebrate our differences but also understand that we all have a common humanity that ties all of us together and this book demonstrates that perfectly with very real everyday moments. Children is a wonderful book for classrooms or libraries and offers 15 pages of informational end-notes and very detailed illustrations. The text is simple (geared towards ages 3-10), but it is very direct and empowers readers to think about different social issues in our world. It is a timely book that shows diversity as being a beautiful thing and can facilitate important conversations about inclusivity. This is a must read for families who want to raise global citizens through fantastic educational material such as this book.
