Using the things in your everyday life to create meaningful connections.

I really, really, really want to be a DIY person.  I’m not.  I rely on kits with exact measurements and instructions and I’m not ashamed to admit that while my projects usually end up pretty awesome, it’s usually due to the quality of a DIY kit and not my own ability.  Believe me, if I was good at creating things from scratch, I would be shouting it from the rooftops.  Ha!  My self-deprecating humor in this area makes me realistic about my abilities, but that doesn’t mean I don’t love creating and using DIY kits with my daughter, who is, in fact, a very talented artist and creator – even at age six.  She once made an entire dollhouse out of paper complete with furniture.  It was so life-like that I was stunned.  How could a person with such a lack of creative talent (besides music, I suppose) create such a force of nature when it comes to making cool things?  I only have one answer.  It’s because I don’t let my lack of neatness or ability in making things homemade stop me from trying project together.  We cook, we bake, we make fun bath items and now – we are creating our VERY OWN candles perfect for the fall season.  To say I was excited was an understatement.  I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE soy candles and to make not one, but TWO mason jar soy candles that smell like Apple Harvest (perfect for the season!) was a joy.  OK, let me start my review before I continue raving about the initial process……

When you want to make candles, but don’t know HOW, it’s good to find a company that is not only completely obsessed with soy candles, and can also create DIY kits to make it idiot-proof for people like me.  The kits can come in two fragrances; Honeysuckle Jasmine or seasonal scent Apple Harvest (our choice).  I figured we couldn’t go wrong.  After all, this all-in-one candle kit includes materials and easy-to-follow instructions to create two mason jar soy candles that even includes gift tags so you can gift one (or both) of your beautiful candle creations to a friend.  To be honest, I wasn’t thinking about giving them away, but it was a nice touch!

Soy wax is awesome because it’s easy to work with, quick to clean up, and environmentally friendly. And when you’re done with the jars, just wash them out with hot water and soap and reuse them.  We use mason jars as cups and have plenty of tops to use with them, so we were set.  And, who knows, maybe we will actually start making even more candles on our own.  It can happen, right?  These kits are perfect for families and recommended for adults or children (with adult supervision, of course!)  Want a great activity for birthday parties, bridal showers, rainy days, and more?  Try this kit!  Best of all, the kit itself makes for a great present – so think about that as we enter the holiday season!  The candle-making process takes approximately 30 minutes and for the best results, let candles cure overnight at room temperature.

Our Experience with the DIY Soy Candle Kit by Labor of Love Co.:

Brooke and I had a wonderful experience making the DIY Say Candle Kit.  We chose Harvest Apple since smells like apple pit – and who doesn’t love that smell?!?  Brooke and I have done a TON  of chocolate melts, but never candle wax.  The closest we got before we did this kit was making homemade crayons with the used pieces and is all done in the oven.  Brooke impresses me more and more and she has really gotten quite good at working with the instructions and sometimes even reads them to me.  The DIY Soy Candle Kit has everything you need except a small pot, and a smaller metal bowl ( you can use glass, but I prefer metal) and oven gloves.  One thing I would like you to note is that if get this kit make SURE you have a funnel handy.  I would have been spilling the wax all over the place.  Brooke helped me hold the funnel as I poured in our yummy oil candles in the provided mason jar and I felt like a huge ‘crafter’ successful momma for at least once in my life.  Add this to your Christmas recommendations because if you know of anyone who likes making useful objects with their hands, this DIY kit is a total hit!
