Back to School and Life is Good!

Life is good donates 10% of its net profits to help kids in need.

This time last year I had a big knot at the pit of my stomach and it was all about ‘Back to School‘.  I couldn’t escape those words – they were everywhere and I had to face the reality of the situation.  My oldest child was starting kindergarten and taking a bus to aftercare for the very first time.  If you follow my blog, you might remember that just a few months before both my daughters were in a very serious car accident where the vehicle was side-swiped and flipped on it’s side and back on all four wheels.  Yeah, intense.  Luckily, their five point car seats probably saved their lives and I don’t know if I was more worried about her starting elementary school or riding a school bus for the first time at just five years old, but either way, I was worried for her.  Yikes!  Let me tell the parents out there who are going through this for the first time this year – it will be OKAY.  I promise!  In fact, it gets easier and then it’s actually a lot of fun when you see how much your child is learning and growing and Brooke actually likes going to school.  Don’t get me wrong, there was definitely a few adjustments for us to get used to like a whole new schedule, homework (yes, in kindergarten!), not to mention all the things you have to pay for added up.  It was an action packed year and when she moved up to first grade, Bob and I were just so darn proud, but also shocked at just how fast the year went.  Wow.  One school year down, and twelve more to go for Brooke and we get to start the cycle once again when our baby Brie enters primary school.  Isn’t parenting grand?

Yes, in fact, parenting and life is good and as we are preparing for a new year, we are thoughtful in our purchases and try to get products that reflect that outlook.  It’s easy to get caught up in so many things in life and the days go by so fast when you have young children, that it is important to reflect and remember that you choose the outlook you have and your kids notice.  I am not oblivious to the things going on in the world, but I have a positive outlook now because I realized it was important for my well being and for that of my children.  When you reflect on the bad, it becomes a self-fulfilling cycle.  Let me tell you about one company that not only makes a difference, it makes awesome products and I found two for Brooke as ‘Back to School’ gifts.

Life
Positivity!
Life is Good is a lifestyle brand that is committed to spreading the power of optimism through their products.   Brothers Bert and John Jacobs credit their mom, Joan, for instilling a passion for life and optimism by asking her six kids each day, “Tell me something good that happened today“.  Over twenty years ago, the brothers spent five years creating their art through their t-shirts and spent their time traveling and living in their van and selling their “Life is Good” brand.  At one point, with only $78 dollars to their name, the brothers had considered giving up on their dream.  However, their idea that “Life is Good” was a re-occurring theme in their life and they created one powerful t-shirt with their logo that changed their lives forever.  It’s not only their lives that have changed, the Life is Good company has expanded with their clientele by sharing personal stories of triumph and donating back to the community in need.

Brooke has a pretty simple wardrobe when it comes to school because four out of the five days of the week, she wears a uniform.  However, every Friday is ‘Free Dress Day!’ and we make it count.  Life is Good has adorable crusher tees for boys and girls that are comfy, simple, easy, and POSITIVE.  Yes!  These 100% cotton, graphic tees are a classic look and are pre-washed for softness and double stitched so that it is a durable essential for any adventurous kiddo.  Brooke picked out the very cool ‘Be You Mermaid’ Crusher Tee that has a wonderful message.  Be yourself, because you are beautiful.

Journals and Coloring Books for a must-deserved wind down time
When dinner is done, homework is complete, and bath time and pajama time is finally here, it’s really important for our family to chill out before bed.  It relaxes our minds and gets us ready for the next day.  Our newly minted first grader has become quite a writer and has enjoyed me capturing her life in a journal I’ve been keeping on her behalf.  Her writing and reading skills skyrocketed in kindergarten and she’s continuing to blossom as a first grader and it was time for her to have her very own serious journal.  We’ve encouraged her reading and writing with supplies and notebooks and are now giving her an opportunity to write in her very own journal at home.  I love the ‘Happy Place’ journal by Life is Good because it makes writing about your day fun.  It’s a great way to remember the good things about your day and she has been tickled to get it and start her new adventure of writing about her life as a first grader.  LOVE!
