Zoey isn’t like the other chickens. She has dreams. She has plans.
I loved this new book by Adam Lehrhaupt called Chicken in Space because I can really relate to the crazy chicken, Zoey, and her big ideas and adventures. Growing up in SE Ohio Appalachia, I had ideas of having adventures and going out into the world. My family told me I was crazy. Most of my friends thought I was delusional. In high school, I had never been on an airplane, had barely left my home state of Ohio, and had very little idea of where my life would take me as I started college at 15. Perhaps I was a little out there with my dreams, but by the time I was 21 I had: finished my undergraduate degree in economics, traveled to many different countries, had studied in Spain, lived on both coasts of the United States, and had started my federal government career and began living in Austin, Texas. Maybe it isn’t so bad to have wild plans and adventures when others around you want to just stay grounded.
Zoey is a chicken who has BIG plans and her best friend, Sam the pig, really just wants to eat pies, but is her reluctant companion who will join her on her wild adventures. Zoey decides she wants to be the first chicken to go to space and besides Sam, all her other barnyard companions think she is NUTS. They live on a farm! How would they launch to space without the necessary tools? Not a problem, Zoey insists, just opportunities to find solutions! As her friend Sam says, Zoey always finds a way. While the space adventure is not exactly a trip to the stars, it is certainly an adventure in itself and underlines the very important qualities of imagination, friendship, and determination. While this is obviously a very funny story, I think it is also important for me to remember that when my kids tell me they want to go on some crazy adventures, that I’m open minded and help them find opportunities for their BIG ideas. You never know when you can launch one in to space…or eat a yummy MOON pie.
