Little Butterfly (Hardcover)(Local Author, Texas Author)

Little Butterfly is a charming and emotional wordless picture book, in the vein of acclaimed books like Suzy Lee’s Wave and Barbara Lehman’s The Red Book, by debut author-illustrator Laura Logan.

At this very moment, my daughter is working on making a monarch butterfly garden for her class project so this was a timely and lovely read for both of us.  We live in Austin, Texas, so it was a delightful surprise when we read that the author of the book Little Butterfly lives right here in AUSTIN.  SQUEE!  While the book is mostly a picture book (aka ‘no words’), Laura Logan’s beautiful illustrations of a young girl with a tattered orange cape finds a monarch with a broken wing, she sheds a tear and magically, the butterfly is able to fly away.  In a wonderful and fantastic moment, the little girl is swept up by a ring of butterflies and lifted high into the air.  As the monarchs surround her, her orange cape is transformed into huge monarch wings as she flies off into the sky.  The ending shows the girl wonderfully watching a monarch in her butterfly cape as she dances around the ground following its journey.  In the back of the book, the author includes notes about her love of monarchs, raising them with her kids here in Austin, and about the butterfly’s metamorphosis and migratory behavior.  Beautiful!
