The best family love album you’ll find anywhere. Cool songs from the coolest indie kids artists that will make your ears and your heart feel awesome.
Mighty Mo Productions began as the brainchild of award winning kids entertainer Jim “Mr. Stinky Feet” Cosgrove as a way to more broadly distribute quality family music by cross-pollinating artists into new markets. Mighty Mo’s first brilliant album was called “Smiles Ahead” and you can read my review of it here. The independent family music scene is flourishing, but often artists toil away in isolation, and one artist’s fans don’t realize that there’s a cadre of other great artists making smart and entertaining music for parents and kids to enjoy together. My family is really enjoying being able to listen to wonderful songs by multiple indie kids artist (such a brilliant idea!) and Mighty Mo’s second compilation album is out now. The latest collection is of the sweetest love songs for families called Heart Beats, and it is AWESOME. You know when you are excited about an album when you have specific songs you want to hear first when you get it. My family had to first hear the latest Caspar Babypants song, “Because I Love You”, first and it didn’t disappoint. As we hungrily listened with our ear holes to the rest of the songs, the girls danced and loved it and Bob and I thought the entire album was a fantastic body of work that is all about LOVE, LOVE, LOVE. Heart Beats says it is full of feel good songs for families and it delivers.
Right off the bat, Andrew & Polly start the album with their adorable harmonizing and poppy rhythms singing lyrics, “Hey, kiddle, I’ve got a riddle” and “I’d run around the world for a little bitta you.” You head starts bobbing and you are immediately sucked in to the rest of the songs which flow from one sweet song to the next. The Verve Pipe’s “When One Became Two” is almost an emotional song to me that talks about adding additions to your family…”When three became four” words sort of hit me because that’s our little family; however, the song goes on an on about having other additions, even TWINS, and even goes on to include ‘things really got wild with the first GRANDCHILD’. Ha. That’s awhile for me, but it’s a fun song. Brady Rymer and The Little Band That Could brings a very fast paced blue-grass-esque song that somehow made me think of John Cougar (when he was still known as ‘Cougar’) Mellencamp. “Light of Love” has a great heartland rock feel and since it repeats the chorus, the girls like to sing along. “Love Is The Way” features the lovely Jazzy Ash and it is a fun collaboration with Jim Cosgrove. I swear I’ve heard this song before, but it’s new, so it’s one of those songs that immediately feels familiar. Her voice is lovely and hearing “Love is The Way” over driving stick rhythms and violins then some sweet keyboards has us grooving. “Love My Lovey” by Katydid is a tribute to our kid’s security blankie or toy. Both my girls have their favorite stuffed animals so this was an easy song to love.
“I’ve been a part of the family music community for nearly 20 years, and it’s loaded with cool, diverse, and talented artists,” Cosgrove said. “So, I started looking for partners who would jump on board and help me introduce this awesome music to more people.”
Caspar Babypants kicks off the second half of the “Heart Beats” album and his music continues to be one of our favs in the children’s music genre. This piano and horn combo is fun and catchy with the simple message, ‘Because I Love You.” The following song “Dear To Me” by Rissi Palmer is this wonderful country-esque song that has lyrics like, ‘if you were a joke, you’d be the laughiest’ which is adorable. I love her harmonies and her voice is lovely. Josh and The Jamtones funky reggae inspired “L-O-V-E” is jamming and fun. “Our Love Fits” is a cute collaboration of Danny Weinkauf and Laurie Berkner. My family is huge Laurie fans and this tribute has harmonies like butter with mandolins and hand clapping – it’s perfect. Joanie Leeds & The Nightlights is a new band to me and “Give Me A Hug” is a delightful song from this Brooklyn, NY band. The album ends with a fitting lullaby from another new-to-me artist, Ratboy Jr, called “E’s Lullaby.” Ratboy Jr is another NY band and I’ve read a lot about their rocking and silly songs, although this song is a simple and slow song that is perfect for nighttime. It’s a great way to end this very solid album of fantastic kindie artists that is all geared towards families about love. This is a strong album, so if you are looking for a collection of songs for your whole family would enjoy, I think it’s fair to say you won’t be disappointed in getting “Heart Beats.” I know that my family found a few new artists that we will continue to follow and will be listening to this album for many years to come.
