Announcing the 2015-2016 Discovery Series!
I recently did a post on The Austin’s Paramount Theatre’s Discovery Series for families (2015-2016) and I’m excited to tell you that my family was able to attend the amazing show called Elephant and Piggie’s We Are In A Play!, based on the Elephant & Piggie children’s book series by THE Mo Willems. I love it when books and performance arts come together, so this was a perfect event for my family. Check below for additional Discovery Series shows and showtimes (The Tale of Peter Rabbit is up next!) and book a show today. Elephant & Piggie Series by Mo Willems
Pink and grey becomes your little one’s favorite colors after reading these early reader series by the famous Mo Willems. The comic book style sets it apart from most children’s books with Piggie’s speech in pink font while Gerald’s (the elephant) words are in grey. Delightfully adorable and geared towards ages 3-5, the ever-enthusiastic duo has been adapted to the theater much to the delight of all of us families who are big fans.
About the Author Mo Willems: Mo Willems (www.pigeonpresents.com), a number one New York Times best-selling author and illustrator, has been awarded a Caldecott Honor on three occasions (for Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus!, Knuffle Bunny: A Cautionary Tale, and Knuffle Bunny Too: A Case of Mistaken Identity). Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus! was also an inaugural inductee into the Indies Choice Picture Book Hall of Fame. The celebrated Elephant & Piggie early-reader series has been awarded the Theodor Seuss Geisel Medal on two occasions (for There Is a Bird on Your Head! and Are You Ready to Play Outside?) as well as garnering four Honors (for We Are in a Book!, I Broke My Trunk!, Let‘s Go for a Drive! and A Big Guy Took My Ball!).

Elephant and Piggie’s We Are In A Play! Synopsis: Elephant Gerald is an elephant: lumbering, formally attired, prone to melancholy. Piggie is (what else?) a piggie: perky, smiley, full of fun. Total opposites? No way! In Mo Willems’s beloved, award-winning, best-selling children’s books, Elephant Gerald and Piggie are best friends! In We Are in a Play!, a brand-new vaudevillian romp of a musical, Elephant Gerald and Piggie sing and dance their way through plenty of pachydermal peril and swiney suspense–facing fundamental questions like, “What do you wear to a fancy pool costume party?”, “Should you share your ice cream?”, and “How can two friends play with one toy?” Backed by the nutty back-up singers The Squirrelles, our duo even gets the audience involved in the action. So get ready for a musical experience ripped from the pages of your favorite books. You’ll be doing the “Flippy Floppy Floory” dance all night long!
Paramount Academy for the Arts. Mo Willems Elephant & Piggie’s “We Are In A Play!”
I wasn’t completely sure what to expect from this play, but it definitely exceeded anything I had tried to envision. First, the Paramount Theatre is really fantastic. Bob and I saw a comedy show here many years ago (pre-kids) and the theatre is celebrating it’s 100th year in existence. I grew up going to old Opera Houses and playhouses, so it’s just a really fancy and unique experience to go to a theatre with that much history. Amazing! Second, I had wondered how Mo Willlems’ books would translate to the stage and, since he DID write this play – including the songs- it went beautifully. The play was a mishmash of all of the books within this series and the ending was quite like you would expect if you have ever read the book Elephant & Piggie: We Are in a Book. The hour long play is timed perfectly for young kids and I even saw babies in the crowd! It was a great experience for all of us.
Unfortunately, I couldn’t take any pictures during the play, but the characters who play Gerald and Piggie were delightful and very much ‘in character’, and the back-up singers, The Squirrelles, were always right on queue. Everyone in the audience of mostly young children and parents, felt part of the play, and there was even a song and dance number where we all joined in. As our youngest daughter Brie said, it was “most awesome!” We look forward to seeing more Discovery Series from the Paramount Theatre and it’s a fantastic way to spend a weekend afternoon with the kiddos. Oh – and did I tell you that you can buy refreshments and snacks, too? Yay!

The Paramount Theatre Celebrates 100 Years! Very few places in Austin can make this claim! With all of the new development happening around Austin, and specifically right here on Congress Avenue, it’s truly remarkable that Austin’s original performing arts venue has stood the test of time. As one of the first – and few remaining – examples of early and distinctive theatrical architecture, the Paramount stands as a testament to how important the venue is to the community and the cultural landscape that makes Austin unique. Once you’re here, you can’t help but feel you’ve entered a special place that wraps itself around you, making you feel welcome, timeless and inclusive, both with other members of the audience and the performance itself. From Houdini to Katharine Hepburn, to current artists like Bonnie Raitt, Lyle Lovett and Sheryl Crow, the Paramount, and its audiences, have seen it all over the past 100 years…and here’s to the next century!
