Challenging the Imagination!
The origins of chess are not exactly clear, though most believe it evolved from earlier chess-like games played in India almost two thousand years ago. The game of chess we know today has been around for more than 500 years! It’s easy to see why a game like chess began when you think of the history of armies and strategy during times of war. In chess, you and your opponent are in each in charge of your own ‘army’. That is, you have your own army of 16 pieces: the King, Queen, two Rooks, two Bishops, two Knights, and eight Pawns. In short, you have one goal in chess. That goal is to catch the other army’s king before they catch yours! When you have him cornered or attacked where he can no longer escape, it’s called “checkmate,” and you win the game. Simple, right? Well, there is a lot of strategy and thinking in the game of chess and age five is the perfect time to teach kids this game of skill.

Bob and I are teaching our five year old how to play chess with this magnetic set and it’s a great way for a beginner to learn. The chess pieces are all the same size and round shape with the piece type (King, Bishop, etc.) depicted by the picture marked on the top of the piece. Each player is either the player with black pieces with white pictures or white pieces with black pictures. While the images are a little small, we haven’t had any problem with identifying each type of piece by the picture. The tin has a base tray in the lid for safekeeping and you can take the lid off the box completely or use the provided plastic clip to attach the lid and base together. Since the pieces are magnetic, it makes it more difficult to lose a piece which makes it a great travel game. So far no lost pieces, and we are having fun teaching Brooke how to master the game of chess.
