February 2, 2016 will be Punxsutawney Phil’s 130th prognostication! Join us for the world’s most famous folk lore celebration and festival!
The US has been celebrating the Groundhog Day holiday since 1886 and it all started in a city in Pennsylvania called Punxsutawney. Punxsutawney Phil (the name of the ‘official’ groundhog) is the only true weather forecasting groundhog. On February 2, Phil comes out of his burrow on Gobbler’s Knob – in front of thousands of followers from all over the world – to predict the weather for the rest of winter. According to legend, if Punxsutawney Phil sees his shadow, there will be six more weeks of winter weather. If he does not see his shadow, there will be an early spring.
In a new Charlesbridge book called “Groundhog’s Dilemma”, the Groundhog announces six more weeks of winter; half his animal friends are disappointed, while the other half are excited. The next year as Groundhog’s Day approaches, each of his animal friends asks Groundhog to make his prediction in their favor the following year. His friends give him gifts of food and lots of favor, and he takes advantage of the situation. In the end, Groundhog finally admits he made promises he couldn’t keep because he was trying to please everyone and makes amends and decides to ‘call the weather like he sees it’. Matt Faulkner’s rich illustrations are packed with hilarious details that will delight readers of all ages. No matter what weather the Groundhog predicts, curling up with this fun book is a great way to spend the winter.
