Product Review: Granny’s Clan: A Tale of Wild Orcas {paperback} (Geared towards Ages 4-10)
From Near and Far, Each Family Answers the Eldest Clan Grandmother with their Own Family Call. We Are Coming.
What do you think about when you think of a granny? A little elderly lady who needs help crossing the street? When I think of my mom’s mother, I think of a lady who can build things out of wood, run in stilts, eat standing up while simultaneously ordering people to get in line. She laughs loud but talks softly unless she needs to be heard. She never takes credit, even well deserved, and knows and keeps everything. Sometimes we take our mothers and grandmothers for granted. We mistake tears for weakness and silence for ignorance. People are strong. Women are people. There is no question we make up half the population and bear the next generation. We should take our paths into motherhood with the seriousness it deserves while simultaneously taking care of one another and patting each other on the back. Yes, our partners will take care of us but they will never truly understand us because they can’t go there and be where we have been or felt what we have felt. That is okay. We have survived and will continue to thrive. As you can see, I take being a female very seriously because it is important to be treated as a strong and equal being.
I will say that this brand-new children’s book from Dawn Publishing on the powerful grandma orca in Granny’s Clan stirred up some intense feelings on the power of females for me. The grandma female orcas are what keep their species alive in the wild and for that our children, our daughters especially, should know that a 100 year old granny can help a family survive. The beautiful underwater pictures and the clear message in this book are the simple ideal that families should stay together and help each other. The Granny is there to see her grandchildren born and takes care of her whole clan when she is needed as they survive the wild. It is very sweet and powerful and a great book for kids. Go, Granny Orca!
