For Ausinites who may not know, there is a GirlStart STEM Center @GirlStart in Austin to encourage young girls in the STEM areas of education. STEM is an acronym for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. We’ve taken several opportunities to take our oldest daughter, Brooke, to GirlStart activities including fairs such as GirlStart DeSTEMber. Brooke always has a blast learning different STEM activities and GirlStart makes it fun. At the last event, her absolute favorite activity was programming a mini-robot called an Ozobot. The Ozobot is a smart and social robot that inspires creativity. I had never heard of it before but to see the way Brooke loved learning how to control the robot through colors and patterns was awe-inspiring. When I asked her what she wanted for Christmas later that month, she included an Ozobot on the list. It’s a little pricey for a small robot, but absolutely worth it to inspire and educate girls in STEM activities, so I’m going to tell you all about it!
Meet Ozobot!
Ozobot is a tiny social little robot that children as young as six can program using colors. You can create your own games with Ozobot or print out some mazes from the Ozobot website. Just add the codes of color with the included handy-dandy markers to have your friendly little robot do some amazing tricks and skills. Brooke was so enamored with this little guy (or gal?) at one of the GirlStart fairs that she wanted to spend the rest of her time learning to code at that table. I immediately knew this was the STEM gift for children and helps foster a love of coding, technology, and, of course, ROBOTS! With fun bleeps and bloops, this mini-R2D2 seems lifelike and watching him spin or move blocks is always entertaining – for the entire family.
