Children’s book publisher of innovative, award-winning picture book-CDs, apps and ebooks featuring the best in world, folk, jazz, rock and classical music
Oh goody! A new The Secret Mountain book and accompanying CD is out! If you are looking for great educational music with a background story, you have come to the right place. In fact, you can use their material in conjunction with the Common Core curriculum (or, in our case, the Texas standard which is quite similar to CC) and it’s an effective vehicle for teaching children early literacy and language. I’m always surprised with how different each new book is and how it focuses on different genres and musical styles, so the first thing we did when we received Under the Moon in the mail, I pop in the album and broke out the book to start learning with my girls.
If the names associated with the album sound familiar, it is because Misja Firzgerald and Ilya Green collaborated below on the second title in The Secret Garden’s jazz infused album entitled Dreams Are Made for Children. The second title in The Secret Mountain’s new collection of jazz-infused music features 13 timeless songs evoking the seasons as recorded by Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, Louis Armstrong, Nina Simone and Fats Walker, among others. The music was selected by Misja Fitzgerald Michel, a Paris-based jazz musician, and noted children’s illustrator Ilya Green created the colorful images in the 36-page hardcover book. With whimsical, dream-like illustrations, this book and accompanying audio CD features a selection of timeless jazz standards covering the four seasons. The book includes 13 popular classics recorded by singing legends from the 50s: Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, Sarah Vaughan, Louis Armstrong, Ray Charles, among others. Explanatory notes accompany each featured song in this must-have book for any jazz fans with a young child.
Selections from the golden age of jazz for a serene night of sleep
For a little background, their jazz album is filled with American singers selected by Misja Fitzgerald Michel from France who studied jazz under François Jeanneau at the National Conservatory of Music in Paris. He later studied at the New School in New York with Jim Hall and Kenny Werner and began with Ravi Coltrane and many other musicians from the young New York scene. His first album, Live at the Villa, was recorded in 1998 and featured Scott Colley and Tony Rabeson. If you follow jazz festivals, you may just be able to see Michel perform!
It wouldn’t be The Secret Mountain album without a beautifully illustrated children’s book that accompanies the music and Ilya Green did a perfect job in her illustrations for “Under the Moon”. Ilya Green is also from France and has written and illustrated books for established publishers like Didier Jeunesse and L’Atelier du Poisson Soluble. Her art is a great backdrop to each song and it’s fantastic to be able to share this artistic endeavor with my children. While Ella sang, “Dreams are made for children and a dream is a fairy tale”; this album is completely real and one that should be cherished in your musical collection with your family.

My absolute favorite song on this album is ‘Moon River’, which may be because I watched “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” one too many times as a child, but wow – it was awesome to hear it again and again on this playlist. You really can’t get any better jazz music straight from Billie Holiday, Ray Charles, and Louis Armstrong, so this is an extraordinary list of songs. This is not an album to be missed!
