A departing tortoise has his bags packed and is almost ready to set out on an adventure, but he can’t leave until he says good-bye to each of his animal friends.
One of the first sentences Brooke put together was from something her Papa would say to her when she was just a little rugrat. “See ya!” She said it constantly to everyone she met. The checkout person at the grocery store, the mailman, the garbage collector, and later she even said it to her pre-k teacher at the end of the day. Brooke has said a lot of goodbyes in her life, especially being far from her grandparents whom she mostly sees just once a year, and so it’s never an actual ‘GOODBYE’, it’s always a ‘See ya, later!” Brooke’s positive attitude has helped me through a miscarriage, the loss of two close friends, the death of our beloved cat we loved for fourteen years, and a battle of a deep depression because her optimism and realism about goodbyes being a new beginning and not a tragic end of an unfinished story is really quite impressive. Kids surprise you like that, and I’ve adopted the phrase, “See ya!” on a regular basis.
See You Later, Alligator is a sweet and colorful book about a tortoise’s trip to the great beyond. The tortoise stops and says goodbye to everyone he sees through engaging illustrations and expressive, rhyming text that children will want to read—and giggle through—again and again. Is the tortoise stalling his trip and continue his good-bye tour before his adventure even begins? With each farewell, the tortoise’s good-byes get sillier and more creative. As he gets ready to say his final goodbye (we think!), he says a poignant phrase that sticks with you. It’s not a goodbye, Mr. Alligator, it’s a ‘See You Later!” Off we go to our next adventure!
