Mousey was watching a baby bird when it fell from its nest. The baby bird is okay, but she can’t fly yet! So how will she get back up the tree to safety?
My brother and I learned at an early age that you can’t mess with nature through bird watching. Baby birds can fall out of their nest or be ignored by their parents, but if you try to intervene, the bird will never be able to be around their peers and certainly never allowed back in their nest after having ‘human smell’ on them. It’s not an easy thing for kids to learn if they are avid animal lovers, but there is a cycle of life and unless you know how to properly care for a baby bird throughout its life, you can’t force a bird family to take back their baby if they do not want to do that. Le sigh!
In the latest children’s book by Nancy Cote (Watch the Cookie!, Sky Pony Press, October 2014), nature decides to intervene when Mousey wants to save a baby bird who has fallen out of its nest. Can Mousey save the baby bird even with a big cat on the prowl? Mousey decides that he can be a good friend and ask his other animal friends for help even if he is just a small little mouse. His bravery is something to admire and the story’s theme is that you can be small, but it’s just the size of your heart that really counts. Nancy Cote’s loyal little mouse is sure to capture the hearts of young readers everywhere with its adorable illustrations and silly narration.
