Pets need plenty of fresh, clean water every day to remain healthy. As pet carers, it is our responsibility to ensure their needs are met.
It’s amazing how time flies and we will be celebrating Mr. Meowmer’s 15th birthday (so 105 human years if you are supposed to add 7 cat years to each human year, right?!?) this summer. Mr. Sydney Meowmer was a tiny little puff of hair when we adopted him; dehydrated, ears full of mites, fur full of fleas, and so malnourished the vet was a little iff-y he would make it through the first night home with us. He stayed with Bob and I in our bed and because he was so sick, he ended up peeing all the bed. Instead of getting upset, I remember saying, “Oh good! Maybe he isn’t feeling so dehydrated now!” Yeah, I’m a cat person!
With time and patience, we nursed Meowmer back to health and that little ball of fluff grew into the biggest Maine Coon cat I have ever seen. He is long and lean with paws that are half the size of my fists and he is a fiesty cat who has grown into a mostly docile cat who loves our girls now that he is considered an ‘elderly cat’. Taking care of an elderly cat is quite different than taking care of a kitten or adult cat. You have to take extra good care of their teeth, you have to sometimes give them mushy food, and you have to make sure they stay extra hydrated. We want Mr. Meowmer to live as long as possible, but we want him to live a HEALTHY life, too. We have been fortunate to have great Vets who give us information on products that keep our pets healthy and our cats have always been considered part of our family.
The Importance of Water to Your Pets
It’s important to always have fresh, clean water available for your pets. Drinking water is also very important in your pet’s daily requirements. Water is the main component of healthy, living cells of the body. Without water, your pet’s body will not be able to function properly. Don’t ever skimp on your pet’s water source because it is essential to their health and wellness.
- A normal cat’s daily water requirement ranges from 5 to 10 fluid ounces per day (or an average of 60 ml/kg/day)
- An average dog needs to drink between 8.5 to 17 ounces of water per 10 pounds (55 to 110 milliliters per kilogram) per day
It’s important to note that the amount of water drunk by an individual pet depends on a variety of factors; including the pet’s size and activity, the season, and whether the pet’s diet includes wet food or dry pet food only (or a combo of both). Factors such as high heat, exercise, or lactation can double or triple the amount a pet drinks. Plus, if you have a pet that has a disease such as hyperthyroidism, kidney disease, and diabetes, this will also greatly increase a pet’s daily water requirements.
TORUS Heyrex Water Bowls for Pets
Sure, we all live busy lives, but forgetting to give your pet water should not be an option. Even if you fill your pet’s water bowl each day, conventional water bowls often contain only a limited amount of water which can be further reduced by evaporation or spills and requiring ongoing refilling. Yikes! Conventional bowls often move around while the pet drinks so it creates a mess when used with larger pets, multi-pets or in busy homes. So, what should we, as pet owners, do?
I’m glad you asked! There is a pet water bowl on the market called TORUS by HeyRex and it’s unlike any pet bowl we’ve ever used. Most self-dispensing water bowls with filters require batteries or a power source limiting portability, but the TORUS does not use an energy source and is perfect to bring on the go!
Storing up to 2 Liters (approx. 8 metric cups, 2 Quarts or 0.5 Gallons) of water inside its reservoir walls. It is ideal for larger pets but can be used for small pets. Available in three colors – charcoal, red and blue. Each Torus bowl comes with one active carbon filter lasting one month.
How TORUS Works
Water is stored inside the TORUS water bowl walls so that it ensures an ample supply of water, protected from dust and contaminants for your pet. TORUS is simple to use and can easily go-anywhere with you and your pet. The valve position, when locked, secures stored water inside the walls so you can take TORUS with you without worrying about leaks. TORUS does not need batteries or a power source to disperse filtered water. The bulk of your pet’s water is stored and protected inside the hollow walls of TORUS. Each time your pet takes a drink, replacement water automatically flows from the storage area through the filter into the drinking well. TORUS is also exceptionally stable for a pet water bowl. This is due to the low profile geometry and soft rubber feet under the bowl that helps prevent accidental spills. The bowls composition (BPA Free) keeps water cooler while in the reservoir walls and the water level in the drinking well is always high enough to allow easy drinking but low enough to minimize water spills and splashes. While you still have to keep a daily eye on your pet’s water supply, the TORUS gives us the peace of mind that our two cats will have enough safe drinking water each day. To us, that is priceless.
Active Carbon Filters
Just like humans, pets are susceptible to toxic minerals and elements in our drinking water system, so TORUS has an active carbon filter that should be replaced each month. The filter significantly reduces flavors and trace elements commonly presented in municipal water supplies.
