Pets need plenty of fresh, clean water every day to remain healthy.  As pet carers, it is our responsibility to ensure their needs are met.

It’s amazing how time flies and we will be celebrating Mr. Meowmer’s 15th birthday (so 105 human years if you are supposed to add 7 cat years to each human year, right?!?) this summer.  Mr. Sydney Meowmer was a tiny little puff of hair when we adopted him; dehydrated, ears full of mites, fur full of fleas, and so malnourished the vet was a little iff-y he would make it through the first night home with us.  He stayed with Bob and I in our bed and because he was so sick, he ended up peeing all the bed.  Instead of getting upset, I remember saying, “Oh good!  Maybe he isn’t feeling so dehydrated now!”  Yeah, I’m a cat person!

With time and patience, we nursed Meowmer back to health and that little ball of fluff grew into the biggest Maine Coon cat I have ever seen.  He is long and lean with paws that are half the size of my fists and he is a fiesty cat who has grown into a mostly docile cat who loves our girls now that he is considered an ‘elderly cat’.  Taking care of an elderly cat is quite different than taking care of a kitten or adult cat.  You have to take extra good care of their teeth, you have to sometimes give them mushy food, and you have to make sure they stay extra hydrated.  We want Mr. Meowmer to live as long as possible, but we want him to live a HEALTHY life, too.  We have been fortunate to have great Vets who give us information on products that keep our pets healthy and our cats have always been considered part of our family.

The Importance of Water to Your Pets

It’s important to always have fresh, clean water available for your pets.  Drinking water is also very important in your pet’s daily requirements. Water is the main component of healthy, living cells of the body. Without water, your pet’s body will not be able to function properly.  Don’t ever skimp on your pet’s water source because it is essential to their health and wellness.

• A normal cat’s daily water requirement ranges from 5 to 10 fluid ounces per day (or an average of 60 ml/kg/day)
• An average dog needs to drink between 8.5 to 17 ounces of water per 10 pounds (55 to 110 milliliters per kilogram) per day

It’s important to note that the amount of water drunk by an individual pet depends on a variety of factors; including the pet’s size and activity, the season, and whether the pet’s diet includes wet food or dry pet food only (or a combo of both). Factors such as high heat, exercise, or lactation can double or triple the amount a pet drinks. Plus, if you have a pet that has a disease such as hyperthyroidism, kidney disease, and diabetes, this will also greatly increase a pet’s daily water requirements.
