Committed to elevating the health of your pets! Wholesome raw foods made with human-grade ingredients.
If you follow my blog, than you will know that my family is crazy cat people. To be honest, it was one of the first things Bob and I noticed we had in common when we first dated. We both grew up with cats as part of our family and I can’t imagine a full life without a feline in the home. Together, Bob and I adopted all of our rescue cats because they needed a good home and they came from bad circumstances. We try and make their lives as awesome as possible and, yes, we treat them as family and even get them Christmas and birthday presents so they don’t feel ‘left out’. It’s hard for me to understand anyone who does not love cats as much as we do, and I like to think that all kitties are well taken care of in the world, even if deep down I know it’s probably not true.
My husband and I love to browse the aisles of the grocery store when we have the luxury of going shopping without the kids and, as cat people, we were recently in awe of a ‘new to us’ pet food line. We just had three days in a row where, due to the holiday break, Bob and I found ourselves ALONE in one of our favorite grocery stores to look and gawk at all the awesome foods: the Whole Foods in downtown Austin. Ahhhhh! As we took our time going through each and every item on their shelves, we both stopped in our tracks in the cat food aisle. Seriously! “Bob! Look! Freeze-dried cat food!” “What?” We are used to seeing cool and healthy freeze-dried food for dogs, but cats? Nope, never. So I read the label and wanted to know more about Primal Pet Foods. I’m excited to tell you about their amazing freeze-dried foods and treats for felines and, yes, for you dog lovers out there, they have a wide assortment of food for doggies, too!
Wholesome, Human-Grade Snacks
Primal Pet Foods was created for dogs and cats with the goal of providing wholesome, human-grade snacks that are made in the USA and free of preservatives, gluten and grain. All of Primal’s treats are produced using USDA meats, poultry and game raised in the United States or New Zealand without antibiotics or added hormones. How awesome is that?!?
First, I have to tell you a little bit about our two cats, AKA the taste testers for Primal Pet Foods:
Mr. Meowmer, our oldest kitty, was born in July 2001 (so he’s 14 1/2.) Mr. Meowmer was a rescue kitten who was limp and starved when we adopted him. We had to de-flea, de-mite, and bring this little kitty back to life and in mere months he turned from a docile tiny squirt to a boisterous alpha cat. He is the king cat of the castle, but as he ages, he has slowed down quite a bit, especially over the last year. He is an extremely picky eater now, and we go through great pains to get him food that is both healthy and that he likes. This is not a simple task! In fact, it’s pretty common in our house to hear, “Meowmer has ‘turned his nose up’ to (of some new healthy cat food).” Lanky and long, this mostly Maine Coon cat is as picky as they come and can’t afford to not eat!
Bella is a rag-doll adoption rescue cat who was in a kill-shelter and her time was almost up. Bob insisted we save her even though we already had two cats (our very special rescue cat, Spike, recently passed away at the age of 13…..which is still very hard to talk about..) and were living in a cramped apartment. She was almost a year old (we estimate her birthday as September 2004, so she recently turned 11) when we adopted her and she has always been the ‘mom’ cat, even though she never had kittens. She likes to lick other cats and people, she ‘cleans’ the litter box if anything is not covered (especially for Spike when he was sick), and seems to eat anything we give her. In fact, we try to restrict her food intake each day because she will wolf anything down (and waits to see if Meowmer finishes his food!), and she probably could still stand to lose a pound or two. Thankfully, besides being a little plump, she’s our healthiest rescue kitty and is a big sweetie.
Picky Vs. Not So Picky!
As you can see, our two cats have vastly different eating habits, which is what makes this taste test so much fun! Mr. Meowmer has a fondness for turkey, so we decided to go with that protein on Primal Pets Freeze Dried Treats and Nuggets to see if he would even eat them. We were interested in the freeze-dried variety lines of Primal Pets because we have older cats and, in Mr. Meowmer’s case, he has sensitive teeth and the freeze-dried treats and nuggets are easy for him to chew and digest. They are also easy to break down into small bites, which is important for elderly cats. We figured Bella would probably eat anything, but it would be interesting to see if she would like freeze-dried kitty food.

Momma’s Bacon Taste Testers Weigh In:
Mr. Meowmer: The first time Mr. Meowmer sniffed these treats he went a little wild, but he wouldn’t eat them. At first. I added a little water (which isn’t a necessity for the nuggets…but I did it any way) so that the nuggets became soft(ER). This was actually a must for Mr. Meowmer since he is an older cat who has had several trips to the vet for his teeth over the years. Once I mushed them up THEN he was interested in eating them. He would eat a little at a time and then leave it. Come back a half hour later and eat a little more….and so on. Even finding things that he will nibble on – let alone eat – is pretty difficult these days, so Bob and I were excited that he liked the freeze-dried nuggets. I’m a little scared to try a different flavor on him since he is so finicky these days, but I knew that if he didn’t like turkey, he wouldn’t like any of them!
Bella: Bella currently has a cold. Can you believe it? An indoor cat with a cold. But, it happened. Even with her sickness and medicine and sneezes, she could hear me open the treat bag from a mile away. This cat has amazing ears when it comes to sounds in the kitchen. She was hooked on the freeze-dried treats from the get-go and I had to be clever putting out the treats for Mr. Meowemer or she wouldn’t eat his, too. One thing I think is interesting is that these nuggets are marketed for both cats AND dogs. I’m sure there are picky dogs out there, but cats can be super picky, so was a little surprised that both our cats liked them. Someone really needs to tell me if their dog likes them, too. I’m so curious now! How is it possible to have the same treat for both pets? Pretty cool.

Mr. Meowmer: I was really excited to try the nuggets on Mr. Meowmer because of the awesome ingredients in it that would be beneficial to him. Have you ever heard of montmorillonite clay? I had not, so when I first read there was CLAY in the cat food, I was like, “WHAT?” But, it’s actually a really awesome thing, so you cat owners Google it and find out more. In a nutshell, the clay is like a calcium supplement for cats and it’s a holistic way to help your cat rid toxins in their body. It’s becoming quite popular among vets to recommend this clay for cats to ingest. You can get the supplements and mix it with water, but if your cats are on the Primal Pet Foods feline freeze-dried nugget plan, they will be covered. The nuggets are supposed to be mixed with water so I knew it would already be easy for Meowmer to eat. The first time we mixed the nuggets, I had to hunt Meowmer down and try and entice him to the kitchen. Unfortunately, he wasn’t hungry. He sniffed and walked away. However, when I offered him his regular food he didn’t want it either. OK, ok, I said. I’ll wait. I had to wait until the next day when Meowmer was ready to eat – and then he was interested. He ATE the food! You don’t get much reaction from this cat, but the fact he will eat it – and eat everything on his plate, speak volumes. Oh, on a related note, the packaging recommends feeding your cat the food in a stainless steel bowl. I’m not sure why, but that is what we did!
Bella: Bella LOVES the nuggets. I’m not surprised but she does inhale the food. The recommended amount per cat is six nuggets each twice per day and two snacks each day and the hardest thing was getting Bella to not go after Meowmer’s food. This hasn’t been too much of an issue because Meowmer has a special diet he was on and we’d feed Bella at different times – but these nuggets are no joke. The nuggets are fresh and contain raw ingredients, so not only do you have a specific time frame to keep them out re-hydrated (or you can wrap them up and refrigerate for later for a small amount of time), you also have to WASH YOUR HANDS really well after handling. I am excited to try this new diet on our ‘kids’ and think this is a great way to keep them healthy and perhaps Bella may even lose a little weight with the new food limits. I’ll keep you posted!
