Join Pig in another fun read-aloud adventure on the farm and find out if she’ll ever catch some ZZZs!
I’m just going to say it. Emma J. Virján is my favorite children’s author that I have ever met – and I’ve had the pleasure of meeting a lot. It has actually made me feel a little unsure of writing a review of her latest book in her A Pig in a Wig series, A Hush and a Shush, because maybe I’m too biased! I can’t help it. She’s my daughter’s favorite author and lives right here in Austin, Texas and has been so generous with her time. She did a book reading at my daughter’s school and when she did a reading of her book at the Texas Book Festival, Brooke was right with her on stage – dressed as a little Pig in a Wig! Emma even signed a copy of my daughter’s cherished book and gave her a pig-snout, which she has on the corner of her bed stand so she can see it at night. She has and carries around Emma’s Pig in a Wig bookmarks – so we may be a little ‘pig’ crazy here at ‘Momma’s Bacon!’ I love that my daughter has a favorite author because Emma is someone she can look up to and it gets her excited about reading, so of course I had to review Emma’s latest book. It just took me some time to write the review to make sure I wasn’t gushing too obviously. Ha.
I’ve said this many times in my book reviews, but I really love bedtime stories for kids. It’s a time when we do our nightly reading and since we are all busy with work, school, and life in general, nighttime books are really comforting. They are part of Brooke and Brie’s nighttime ritual of going to bed. If we don’t read stories, the girls will not sleep, and continue to ask us to read. Of course, Bob and I don’t mind because we want our kids to love reading, so it was a really nice surprise that the second A Pig in a Wig book is all about going to sleep.
What this bedtime needs
is a pig in a wig
brushing her teeth,
combing her hair,
and getting ready for bed
with her pink teddy bear.
As in her first ‘Pig’ book, What This Story Needs is a Pig in a Wig, Pig has lots of farm friends who seem to always want to be around her. When it’s time for bed, Pig in a Wig gets ready and settles down for some quiet time and in come all her friends. Her NOISY NOISY friends. Brooke laughed and laughed as poor Pig’s friends come in honking, mooing, meowing, and cooing and Pig can’t get any shut eye! As the title suggests, it turns out what this bedtime really needs is a quieter place to sleep! This is a wonderful bedtime story and has since become a little saying in our home when Brooke or Brie asks us to ‘please read JUST ONE MORE bedtime story.’ Bob and I will say, “What this bedtime needs is a Hush and a Shush!” And you know what – it almost always works! We love you Emma, keep the Pig books coming!
