A Dog’s Life on a Ferry Boat is Good

I have great memories of watching boats, barges and sternwheelers go up and down the Ohio and Muskingum Rivers as a child.  It was such a treat to take the Valley Gem sternwheeler to the historic West Virginia State Park in the middle of the Ohio on Blennerhassett Island (if you want to read more about the life of the man Blennerhassett and his ties to Aaron Burr and Thomas Jefferson, read the island’s history here.)  Any chance I get to float on the water, I do!  It is particularly fun to travel by ferry.   From crossing the waters of Puget Sound, the largest ferry system in the country, to visit Seattle to ferrying across Lake Erie to honeymoon on Pelee Island, Ontario, I seek out ways to spend time on the water.  In Sleeping Bear Press’s newest book, Ferry Tail, Walter the ferry dog has a wonderful life on the water – until….

Ferry Tail explores the life of a ferry Captain from the perspective of his loyal dog, Walter.  Walter takes his job very seriously, from tasting food to make sure it is perfect to posing for pictures with the passengers.  Too bad he also has to share his space with the Captain’s cat, Cupcake.  Walter starts to wonder if he is being taken for granted and decides to explore life on land.  This is a great story for kids who may need a reminder that there is no place like home in this classic ‘the grass is always greener’ tale.  Very cute and fun book that let me share about my life and experiences on the water.
