I love when I am able to learn from my children’s books and New Clothes for New Year’s Day was a new concept for me at how it is a Korean tradition to get a new outfit and join with the family for the start of the New Year. The book is simple in its message; it is a little girl who demonstrates how to put on her Korean New Year’s Day outfit. However, for those like me who know little about the traditional New Year’s dress of a Korean girl, it was fascinating to hear the care and complicated wardrobe that is assembled with great pride for luck in the New Year. Under-robes, silk shirts, rainbow colored jacket with hair ribbons and good luck items (sachet and character embroidery) down to the details of the socks and shoes. The illustrations make this book even more fascinating with vivid coloring done in a pen and ink fashion. My older daughter (who is becoming quite a little fashionista – definitely not from me) ate it up!
