Lullabies and Nursery Rhymes from the Maghreb

If you want your child to experience the lullabies and nursery rhymes from across North Africa (Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia respectively) than this is your book.  This storybook from the Secret Mountain is a CD/Storybook of thirty songs from the Sahara Desert through the Atlas Mountain to the Mediterranean Sea.  Some of the lyrics are shocking, some endearing and many enlightening yet all told and translated from Arabic.

Songs in the Shade of the Olive Tree would have been just gibberish without the translation to my daughter of the meanings behind the songs written into the book.  Some songs, like ‘Atas atas amiammi’ about a sleeping beautiful child are so sweet it is hard not to get a little choked up.  My daughter was a huge fan of the song ‘Níní ya Moumou’, which is another sleepy lullaby song, but she loved it because it sounded like it was talking about our cat, ‘Meowmer’.  Ha!  Other songs are hard to describe to a child like, ‘Ya dounya’ from Algeria which talks about how hard life is without parents.  However, the songs are traditional and performed by all ages (I love the ones sung by children) with indigenous acoustic instruments, it is hard to not be impressed by the uplifting music if sometimes the words are a little difficult to our first world ears.

About The Secret MountainAward-winning stories and music for all eyes and ears.  The Secret Mountain is a Montreal, Quebec company that is dedicated to creating quality children’s books, videos and audio recordings.  I love their pairing of books with music that adds to the quality of a child’s learning.  Check out their English (also available in French) titles and store here.
