Celebrating Ten Years of Children’s Books!

Not convinced fractions are fun?  How about a little history to understand that the Ancient Egyptians use of fractions developed out of a need to divide their food and supplies among themselves?  Yes, it is true; there is much evidence that Egyptians were writing simple fractions as special hieroglyphs or as the sum of unit fractions a long, long time ago out of a simple necessity to share equally. Fractions can be *gasp* fun and this entertaining book called Whole-y Cow is a math book for kids that provides entertaining illustrations with a rhyming scheme for young children to grasp concepts of halves, thirds, fourths, eights and tenths.  Integers can’t fully describe our world around us and children can start to understand the difference between a numerator (top) and denominator (bottom) at an early age to build a relationship for later advanced math concepts.

Whole-y Cow: Fractions Are Fun is a silly and educational book for kids that follow a crazy Cow and her friends as she incorporates different activities that deal with fractions.  One example is when Cow’s friends paint a blue color on her and readers are asked what portion of her body is the color blue.  It smartly helps a child visualize the differences between whole numbers with their equal parts in a simple manner so children as young as five can understand.  For parents who feel fractionally-challenged, have no fear, there is an answer key at the back of the book which also shows how to reduce the fractions to lowest terms (so 2/8 is shown as being reduced to 1/4).  Definitely check out the teacher’s guide below that has special activities, like following a recipe, to help your child learn more about fractions.  See, fun!
