Product Review: Stress Free Kids (Indigo Dreams for Children)‏, CD/Audio Book (Suited for Ages 4-9)

We help children, teens, and adults decrease stress, anxiety and anger.

Being hyper and having insomnia go hand and hand and I was one of the lucky kids who had both since my earliest memories from childhood.  My mom puzzled over my sudden interest to talk to her at night to delay the inevitable sleeplessness.  My brain just would not turn off and the more I thought about sleeping, the more restless I would become.  My saving grace came when I was a sophomore in high school and I heard about the technique of progressive muscle relaxation through my psychology teacher.  My mom somehow got me a Relaxation CD that started out with sounds of running water followed by a very calming voice that went through each body part and how each was being put to ‘sleep’.  I would put the CD on repeat and usually by the third or fourth play I would be out for a solid four or five hours.  That one CD produced such relief to a child where a night of actually no sleep was more than just a once in a blue moon occurrence so when I ran across the Stress Free Kids website, I was very interested in doing a product review.

Out of all the Stress Free Kids products, I chose to do the Indigo Dreams for Children CD/Audio book because of the introduction to relaxation and stress-management techniques that helped me as a child.  Indigo Dreams is a 60 minute bedtime relaxation CD that has four audio stories for children that incorporate such relaxation techniques as breathing exercises, affirmations, muscle relaxation techniques and peaceful visualizations to help induce sleep.  The wonderful thing about Indigo Dreams is that it takes the same bedtime relaxation techniques recommended for adults, but puts them in a format geared towards kids.  Each of the four audio books presented on the CD focus on a different relaxation technique; A Boy and a Bear (breathing techniques), The Affirmation Web (positive statements), A Boy and a Turtle (visualizations) and The Goodnight Caterpillar (relaxation techniques).  The four audio books can also be purchased in a book format through the Stress Free Kids website for $10.95 each and are a great way to give a child a visual (the cute little caterpillar doing relaxed breathing in Goodnight Caterpillar is so adorable!) for nighttime relaxation.

The Indigo Dreams CD provides a wonderful tool for parents to give to their kids with sleep issues.  The narrated books are smartly designed for children and are accompanied by such soothing sounds as animals, light keyboard and a gentle breeze with an additional track of just music at the end of the stories.  The CD is perfect for kids who are suffering with stress, anxiety, hyperactivity, anger and other stress-related issues that can stem from things like lack of confidence or anger.  These relaxation techniques have also been useful for children with Autism or Aspergers Syndrome.  Relaxation and sleep are a beautiful gift to those, like myself, who have struggled with sleep issues since childhood and Lori’s Indigo Dreams CD is one I wish I would have had before I entered high school.

About Creator Lori Lite:  What can I say about the lovely Lori?  She is a mom, parenting expert, and Award Winning Author of Relaxation Books, CDs & Lesson Plans.  Her inspiration behind Stress Free Kids stemmed from her daughter’s night terrors and she coped by turning the experience into developing positive products to help other kids (like her daughter) to have stress free nights of sleep.

  1. This sounds very interesting. I have an 8 yo with Aspergers and there are days that he is very stressed and has bad dreams, and a hard time sleeping. I am going to look further into this to help him out, thanks for sharing your experience.

    • Thanks so much for commenting, Whitney! I can definitely relate to the not sleeping part and it just adds to your stress levels on top of not feeling rested. Please keep me updated. I know how hard it can be for him and know it has to be tough for a mom. Progressive muscle relaxation (now your foot is going to sleep, etc..) works wonders for me and might be a great place to start.

  2. Just purchased the digital copy of this and I am going to burn it to CD so I can listen to it with my 4 year old tonight. Nighttime has been such a struggle; he keeps getting up and engaging us in conversation and we need to find a way to help him ‘calm his body’ I have my fingers crossed this is going to be effective for us!

    • Good luck, Amber. Thank you for your comment. The ‘putting each body part’ to sleep helped me so much as a child and I hope it eases your son’s mind. Keep me posted! Hugs.
