Art inspiration can come from many places and Barbara Lee’s, a special needs teacher, motivation for crayon rocks came from the Handwriting Without Tears program. Barbara learned how important it was to develop a good tripod grip early. While this is the cornerstone of handwriting skills, not a lot of crayons support this important grip. So, not only are they cool looking crayons that look like rocks, they are also an important and fun tool for developing your child’s fine motor skills.
The Crayon Rocks Christmas Special set comes with 20 crayon rocks and a fabulous wood snowflake to do rubbings. The set comes in an adorable golden pouch, which is perfect for the holiday season. It may seem early for a holiday stocking stuffer review, but this is a cool limited edition (complete with the adorable snowflake) and I wanted to get the word out early while supplies last! The crayons are made with all natural soy wax from USA grown soybeans and colored with mineral pigments. Although Barbara started crayon rocks in California, she moved her operation to rural Kentucky in 2011 and fell in love with the area. You must check out some of Barbara’s crayon rock drawing here.
