Digestive enzymes are enzymes that break down food into usable material.There is a different enzyme to break down all the different foods that you eat.Here is a list of the most common enzyme types and foods they act on:
• Amylase – breaks down carbohydrates, starches, and sugars which are prevalent in potatoes, fruits, vegetables, and many snack foods. You will find this enzyme most prevalent in digestive enzyme supplements because these are the most common foods people are eating today.
• Lactase – breaks down lactose (dairy)–this is one of the first enzymes people begin to lack. When this enzyme is lacking we become lactose intolerant which can cause lots of gas and bloating when dairy is consumed.• Diastase–digests vegetable starch.
• Invertase – breaks down sucrose (table sugar).
• Protease – breaks down proteins found in meats, nuts, eggs, and cheese–another really important enzyme that people tend to be lacking causing items like meat to sit around too long in the stomach and putrefy. This can result in stomach pain, gas, bloating, reflux and ultimately constipation or diarrhea.
• Lipase – breaks down fats found in most dairy products, nuts, oils, and meat.
• Cellulase – breaks down cellulose, plant fiber–this enzyme is not produced naturally in the human body. The only way to have cellelase is to eat foods that contain cellulase. If you don’t eat a lot of green vegetables and then every once in a while eat green you may find those greens difficult to digest.
