With their family friendly lyrics and optimistic instrumentation, this music offers an invitation into that golden childhood we dream of having ourselves and creating for the ones we love.
Ants Ants Ants is a Portland-based musical collaboration project, led by former members of the hip indie bands The Dimes (Johnny Clay- who grew up near New Braunfels, TX!) and Derby (Dave Gulick). These catchy songs about blue whales, pinwheels, helicopter leaves — and the big questions of life — are about to march into your musical picnic! With stylistic nods to 1970’s era Sesame Street, School House Rock, and “The Point” by Harry Nilsson, Ants Ants Ants recalls the best elements of a fun and fanciful childhood – the thrill of knocking down a tower of blocks; the fun of imagining what your dog is thinking; a make believe world where nocturnal animals meet in the park at night to play games.
Why a family music project?
Dave says, “It just feels great to do something that’s from the heart and brings a little bit of joy and optimism into the world”.Johnny says, “For me, these songs are capturing this special time in my life with our kiddos… from the questions they ask, to the games we play and just the way they view the world.”
After much success in their individual bands, Dave and Johnny (with two kids of his own) decided to collaborate on music that was just for families. Like the real-world critters that inspired the band’s name, these Ants love working together and bringing friends along for the picnic. The extended Ants team includes other local musicians with amazing resumes (click on the Why Why Why? credits below!) of their own as well as mixing engineer and long time friend Will Hensley who won a GRAMMY for his work mixing the 2016 Award-winning Best Children’s album, Home by Tim Kubart.
Why Why Why? offers beautiful melodies and harmonies with lyrics that sometimes pose questions that I still can’t answer as an adult. Perhaps that is what makes childhood so magical; you may not know lots of the answers, but you are sure that someone out there does. Your curiosity is quenched by the next question and ants are as exciting as a new toy. I love how my daughters sing the lyrics and dance without a care because that is why I listen to music that is made just for them. It suddenly means the music is also for me. Yay!
