This beautiful and informative picture book follows a single tree through the fall season, from the end of summer to winter’s first snowfall. A great read-aloud for home and the classroom by the New York Times–bestselling creator of My Heart Is Like a Zoo and Red: A Crayon’s Story.
Brooke loves Michael Hall’s new book entitled Wonderfall that is perfect for the fall season. Although there are times that Austin, Texas doesn’t have the same dramatic change from summer to fall as what I was used to growing up in Ohio, there is a big relief as temperatures drop below triple-digits and we start to see leaves changing to autumn colors and begin to fall from the trees. As Brooke and I began to discuss the changing of the seasons and what we looked forward to in the fall season, Brooke was excited to learn that many of the things she looked forward to were written right here in this book!
Wonderfall follows a single tree through the changing of the seasons. People, animals, and vehicles pass in front of the tree, celebrating holidays, playing in its leaves, and getting ready for winter. The book includes fifteen combined words (thankful + fall = thankFALL, plentiful + fall = plentiFALL) that underscore the themes and concepts of the season. The main attraction is, of course, the beautiful tree that drops acorns, loses leaves, and provides food and a home for a pair of scurrying squirrels. Brooke and I liked talking about the upcoming holidays, like Halloween and Thanksgiving, and how we looked forward to the cooler weather. What was really fun was discussing how animals adapted to the change of the seasons and the difference between hibernation and migration. Hall’s book has several pages in the back with additional educational learning such as the science behind squirrels, acorns, and saplings and specific animals that migrate or hibernate towards the end of the fall in order to prep for the winter ahead. Love!
