The Angry Birds Movie Release date is May 20, 2016 (USA)!
If you haven’t heard by now, The Angry Birds Movie is being released on May 20, 2016 here in the United States of America. If you don’t know about the Angry Birds, let me try to tell you a little bit more about them and talk about the new books through HarperCollins that are coming out to support the movie. To be quite honest, I’ve known about the Angry Birds for years, but I have to research more about them myself in order to provide you with information on this post!
Who are these Angry Birds? Why are they so…..ANGRY?
I personally learned about Angry Birds back in 2010, the same year I became a mommy, because I have friends that are REALLY into apps. One of my friends, in particular, was into this app game called Crush the Castle which was the first app game in the series released in 2009 that inspired Angry Birds. Angry Birds was so popular that by October 2010 12 MILLION copies were purchased through the App Store and began being released through many smartphones and video game consoles. It was so successful mainly because it was simple, fun, and a CHEAP way to play a video game.
What do you do in the Angry Birds video game? In this bizarrely addictive game, the players use ‘slingshots’ to launch these Angry Birds at pigs (yes, PIGS!) around various structures in order to ‘destroy’ all the pigs on the playing field. These funky wingless birds are ANGRY because these pigs (that are green and very hungry) have stolen their eggs and the birds are basically just trying to retrieve their ‘kids’. The game has many levels where each player receives a star based rating on how well they did in each round. There are different types and colors of birds that vary in size and abilities that try to attack these hard-to-reach pigs. This game keeps growing in popularity that as of mid-2015, the series’ games have been downloaded more than three billion times and Columbia Pictures is now releasing the very first Angry Birds movie this spring. Are we all up to speed now?
HarperCollins Children’s Books has now made a series of books based on this favorite video game and the movie for various children’s age groups/reading abilities that I will tell you about now. Although our family has never played the game (SHOCK!), we did have fun reading the Level 2 I Can Read! books based on the movie. In fact, we are now planning on seeing the movie because Brooke finds the books funny and silly. So, if you are a video game lover, movie lover, or book lover, Angry Birds now has cornered the market on all three!
