Jake’s Kindergarten Checkup: A My Sister, Me and Dr. Dee (Paperback)
Included: easy-to-understand explanations of a checkup’s elements and the accompanying medical tools and Tips for Parents – Preparing for Your Child’s Well Child Checkup and Vaccines.
Our girls don’t seem to mind the pediatrician, but it’s the eye doctor and dentist that gives them the heebie jeebies. That, of course, doesn’t stop us from taking them to their check-ups, and we’ve found some ways to make them less anxious about their appointments. As we are gearing up for a new school year, I thought a new book by an award-winning pediatrician, Dr. Chrystal de Freitas (affectionately known as “Dr. Dee” to her patients) would be a great resource for parents who have children who dread going to the doctor. I found it informative and while my daughter already had her kindergarten check-up last year, she still has her annual appointments and it was fun to go over the book with her and talk about how it all went down last year.
In Jake’s Kindergarten Checkup, Jake welcomes his Kindergarten Checkup with Dr. Dee but fears the necessary dreaded shots. His tag-along sister Chloe increases his fear at each step of the exam until her surprising empathy helps Jake muster the courage to complete the checkup. The awesome thing about this book is that it explains what the appointment entails to increase the uncertainty for a child, which is usually the cause of their anxiety. Visits to the pediatrician are necessary and beneficial for children, and they can even be *gasp* FUN. In the book, Jake and his sister head home after his appointment and Jake is excited to be Kindergarten-bound and that his checkup wasn’t as bad as he thought it would be. The author, ‘Dr. Dee’, has taken all she’s learned in her more than 34 years in practice and provides fresh, fun, and applicable tips for taking the “scary” out of checkups in Jake’s Kindergarten Checkup which is also beautifully illustrated by Tammie Lyon.
In it, Dr. de Freitas addresses:
- The steps involved in a pediatric checkup – what kids can expect
- How parents can help prepare their child for a doctor visit
- Techniques to make shots less scary for everyone
- Ways to ensure a checkup is educational and fun for children
- The value of sibling support
- And much more
