Perfect relationships don’t exist. Arguments will happen. Learn to fight fair and the love will last.
I swear I don’t do this on purpose, but I seem to always write some of my most serious posts on April Fool’s Day. I just happen to be writing today about this very important idea on how to ‘fight fair’. There is no ‘perfect’ relationship. Life is full of ups and downs so when problems do arise you can get angry at the very people you love the most. We all have intense feelings and emotions, but don’t we all want to have happier and healthier relationships with those we love? OF COURSE WE DO!
Most of us don’t have a guidebook or the best examples of learning to fight fair when we grow up. Words and actions can sting a lot longer than physical wounds and it’s time we stop that nonsense. A parent’s actions affect children on a deep level and I want to teach my children while giving them a voice whether I feel like they are being right or wrong. We all have opinions and beliefs that matter to us, but we can argue without hitting below the belt and at the end of the day we all love each other and want the best of each other. I don’t HAVE to fight – and if I do, I can fight ‘fair’. Liz ‘SuperLibrarian’ Hanley has read over 500 self-help books and put them into an easy-to-read and beautifully photographed book that captures the essence and wisdom of having happy and healthy relationships with your family.
Here are some of the wonderfully simple tips in Liz’s book:
- Keep arguments private
- No name calling or put-downs
- Don’t get off track with other issues
- Let it go and move on
- Don’t wait for the fall – ask for help
- Don’t play the blame game
- Don’t be stubborn
- Try to see the other’s point of view
- Always end arguments on good terms
