It’s a rainy day in the month of May and Sam spots a rainbow, and then a puddle. A perfect spring puddle.
When I was little, a big rain meant one thing; ‘painting’ our garage. We lived in an old farmhouse that was approximately 100 years old in SE Ohio and the garage was detached from our home. My older brother and I would put out buckets to gather rain water and with our brushes, we would ‘paint’ the garage with rain water. For whatever reason, we found this to be a fun and exciting experience and looked forward to when we could paint again! Getting completely soaked was part of the game and sometimes it would still be sprinkling while we were out doing the ‘work’. Ha! The fun we used to have in the rain came to me as Brooke and I were reading a new book by Anne Margaret Lewis (author) and Nancy Cote (illustrator) called “Puddle Jumpers.”
“Puddle Jumpers” is a happy picture book that celebrates the simple, pure joy of jumping in a rain puddle. His mother warns, “No! No jumping in puddles! You must keep clean today!” but Sam can’t stop himself from testing the water with his galoshes. And then the puddle invites him to play. The puddle whispers, “Jump, Puddle Jumper, jump!” and with that very first jump, Sam is off on an adventure of the imagination. Sam is having so much fun in his puddle that even Mom can’t resist. With a leap and a thwump, she’s jumping too, cheering, “Jump, Puddle Jumper, jump!” The cheerful illustrations are full of kid appeal, a perfect match to a story that captures the magic of being a child. Let your imagination take you on your own adventure the next time you encounter an irresistible puddle. With a rainy winter coming up, this is a perfect book for every child’s library!
