Eccentric Etched Glassware Made with Austin Personality

The Blue Genie Art Bizarre in Austin, which just ended on December 24, is a great place to find local artisan crafts for Austin gifts.  This year was no different and I was extremely impressed with glass etchings that were done by a one-woman Austin show in her home studio.  WOW!  Amy Davis is an Austin mom to a little ‘monster’ and this momma does all the drawing, blasting and shipping for her Monster Dance Designs Company.  Her original designs are individually sandblasted onto each glass in her home studio in Austin, TX.  Let’s just say I was very impressed and a little jealous of her amazing skills.

What is sandblasting?

Designs are sandblasted onto the glass using a stream of pressurized air and recycled abrasive grit to carve right into the surface of the glass for a design that won’t fade or wear off like a decal. A resist pattern made with vinyl or UV sensitive film defines the area to be etched and protects the rest of the glass.  It’s beautiful, it’s permanent, and Amy’s designs are quite unique.

Austin Gifts for Austin (and beyond!) Dads!

I tend to think of my husband as a fun and whimsical Austinite dad.  Born right here in Austin, he was a Stay at Home Dad for four years, is an Army Veteran (Medic), and now works in the printing industry at the University of Texas.  He SCREAMS ‘Austin’!  Amy’s designs are PERFECT for his man cave, which is essential a ‘man garage’, but I digress…….

Amy’s Dinosaur Quartet Sandblast Etched Shot Glasses by Monster Dance Designs is ”like a barbershop quartet of shot glasses, except with dinosaurs”.   That bronty is a fabulous tenor!  Each set contains four shot glasses approximately 2″ in height and are etched with with either a Stegosaurus, T-Rex, Triceratops, and an Apatosaurus (Bronty).  Amy’s fun and functional designs are individually sandblasted onto each glass in her home studio in Austin, TX and are dishwasher-safe, restaurant quality glassware, and are sandblasted for a crisp and permanent design.
