I’ve never ‘juiced’ before.  When I was going through an extreme bout of post-partum depression, I was instructed to go on a protein shake diet because I just couldn’t eat.  Sometimes depression does that to you.  It wasn’t that I didn’t like eating, I was just working my way out of a fog, food seemed unappetizing, and I REALLY needed nutrients.  I’m not going to lie, it was hard to keep up with it.  BUT ultimately, a combination of treatments and taking in much needed calories started me on a track back to health.  So, here I am, almost two years later and I am still thinking and doing things to stay healthy.  I’m not a big person, some would call me ‘skinny’, but considering that has been my body type my whole life, I just call it ‘me’.  And, skinny or not, I DID have gestational diabetes and am at risk for Type II Diabetes, so I started to seriously think about these juice cleanses I’ve heard about for so long.  Luckily, there is a place in Austin that makes their own juices and even concocted their own Juice Austin Cleanses.  I’m game!

While Juice Austin also offers vegan foods, smoothies, salads, and granola bowls, their namesake is their bread and butter (vegan-butter, of course).  They are a So-Co establishment, so while my address is not in their cleanse delivery zone, they will deliver for an extra 5$ fee to my house.  Score!  Let me break down their delivery info first and then talk about their juice cleanses.

Now, on to the juice cleanses, and friends, I did my homework!  First, the whole argument about juice cleanses ridding your body of toxins has conflicting information but more experts believe it is unnecessary for ridding your body of toxins.  After all, that’s what our liver and kidneys do!  However, while you cleanse, you are giving up ‘junk food’ and processed ingredients, so you are giving your digestive system a rest.  Also, a juice-based diet is a good way of getting more phytonutrients (AKA nutrients from plants) found in fruits and vegetables than you normally ingest and going on a detox can also jump-start a commitment to a healthier diet.  Going on a juice cleanse doesn’t mean you will lose weight although some people may, but it is VERY important to have a plan to have a diet in place once you finish a cleanse.  After reading a lot more material that I can fit into one post, I thought a one-week juice cleanse would be beneficial to me (especially since my blood sugar levels are now normal) and to cut back on any intense work-outs during the period for obvious reasons.  If you juice, make sure the juice is all-natural (like Juice Austin) and many doctors recommend eating a normal nutrient- rich diet for at least a month before you start.  Check and check.  Many juice cleanses involve a pre-cleanse program of eliminating foods like dairy, caffeine, and alcohol before starting the cleanse, so be sure to follow their instructions.

OK!  You want to do a juice cleanse, but first realize there are some VERY important tips to have a healthy and successful cleanse.

Stay On Top Of Your Juices

Aim to drink a juice every 2 to 2.5 hours. That means at least six juices per day.  That may SEEM like a lot, but if you skip a juice, you will feel hungry and your blood sugar can crash – which believe me, really REALLY sucks.  SO, even if you are not hungry when it is time for your next consecutive juice, drink your next juice.  Myles from Juice Austin also explained the importance about drinking water in between juices.  It helps reduce cravings and they recommend 8-12 oz. of H2O in between each juice.

Tips For A More Effective Juice Cleanse

  • Dry Brushing: Dry brushing daily during your cleanse, sloughs away dead skin cells, and opens your pores for the elimination of toxins.
  • Sweat: Breaking a sweat is your body’s most efficient method of toxin elimination. Infrared sauna sessions, a brisk walk or a few minutes of jumping rope all help your body to generate heat on a cellular level.  Don’t overdo your work-outs, but keep your body in motion.
  • Eliminate Waste: It is not uncommon to see a decrease in elimination as your cleanse continues. Less in can equal less out. However, it is important that you pay attention to your body’s signals. If you are experiencing detox symptoms like nausea but have not eliminated waste from your intestines, you could need to encourage elimination through an herbal laxative (senna), enema or colonic.  Gross, yes.  Necessary, absolutely!

I WANT TO EAT SOMETHING!  BUT I DON’T WANT TO CHEAT!

Hey, first of all you are doing this cleanse to feel better and jump start a healthy diet.  If you are wanting to chew on something, first check in with yourself and see if you are really hungry or if you are simply craving that chewing sensation. If the answer is the latter, let it go! YOU CAN DO THIS. If the answer is that you truly are very hungry and you need an extra something to push through . . . DO this! You should not beat yourself up about having a sensible snack and then jumping right back on track with your juices. Some great healthy snacks are salads, fruit, nuts, or even an avocado (my fav, YUM!).  This won’t undo your juicing and you are honoring your body.  In fact, Juice Austin encourage those who are doing cleanses to keep snacks small – nuts, raw veggies, a small piece of fruit – handy during your cleanse if you want something to snack!

SO, after all that, what types of juice cleanses do Juice Austin offer?  Two of their popular cleanses (which I’ll list below) are the Roots Cleanse and the Green Juice Cleanse.  I’ll post both of the daily six juices with their ingredients below and let you decide if either would work for you.  For me, I wanted the ROOTS.  The Roots juice has ingredients I love, is packed with antioxidants and there are two green juices per day that have a yummy mylk (fake milk for vegans) that tastes like vanilla.  It was perfect for me and I knew it was doable.

The Roots Juice Austin Cleanse

The Roots cleanse is packed full of vitamins and minerals and is an excellent source of antioxidants! It is supplemented with 2 green juices and topped off with the popular nut mylk Vanilla Sky. Each cleanse day includes 6 16 oz juices:

After The Juice Cleanse

So how do I feel after a week of juicing?  Pretty darn good.  Let me say, though, that I cheated a little.  I had to have coffee on Day 2 and 3…okay, and maybe a cup on day 5.  Oops.  Caffeine was, by far, the hardest habit for me to kick and with two little kids getting up in the morning can be a little rough.  As I don’t weigh myself, I have no idea if I lost, gained, or stayed the same, but certainly felt much better about my health overall.  The juices were refreshing and tasty and they actually filled me up if I kept to the schedule.  I spent some time meditating, bike riding, and doing yoga (which I practice regularly anyway) and felt that the juices sustained me throughout although I did have a few healthy snacks (almonds, my friends, are the best) to help me through when I needed something to munch.

Now, for those that don’t know, the post-cleanse is just as important as the pre-and during cleanse.  Let me fill you in on the details so you are fully aware of what a real juice cleanse means after the fact.

Take A Moment

Celebrate your accomplishment for your mind and body. For each day that you cleansed, you fed your body 20 pounds of organic produce, nourishing your cells and elevating your wellness. Reflect on how you feel immediately after cleansing, what you learned and what you want to keep in mind as you move back into eating whole foods.

Lean Into Whole Foods

You must begin to integrate eating whole food back in to your diet.  Be mindful that your digestive system has been in a state of complete rest. Your first days post cleanse should include lots of veggies and fruits. The items to absolutely avoid in the first few days after your cleanse are red meat, dairy, alcohol, processed or fried foods. Smoothies are a great post-juice cleanse way to jump start your digestive system.

Monitor How You Feel

In the days immediately following a cleanse, there is an opportunity to identify potential food sensitivities you never knew you had!  If you suspect that you may have a sensitivity to wheat, dairy, nuts, soy or anything else, systematically add these foods back into your diet one at a time. This will help you identify if any of these foods are a trigger for you. Read more on identifying food sensitivities post cleanse – there are multiple and wonderful resources out there and, of course, talking to a nutritionist is always helpful.

Would I juice again?  Absolutely.  It’s not something I would do regularly, but perhaps once or twice a year would be a good schedule for me to consider.  It is a tad expensive getting organic, natural juices that sustain you for a week straight, but to do a cleanse to jump start a healthy lifestyle with food is great and something I imagine I’ll do again when I feel the need.  The juices were delicious, “Tropic Thunder” is definitely my favorite – tangy with grapefruit, although “Happy Family” is a close second.  I really love how Juice Austin labeled the order in which to consume the juices, which I found quite helpful and thoughtful.  I highly recommend getting into smoothies for a few days post cleanse, too.  I’m still not eating red meat or fried foods and I rarely eat dairy anyway since my past struggle with gestational diabetes, so my body has taken to eating whole foods again quite naturally.  I may become a Vanilla Mylk junkie (darn, that stuff is delicious), but I may cut back on my juice intake for a few weeks and go with drinking a lot of water, which is what I’m doing at the moment.  I still love carbs (my biggest weakness), but processed sugar makes me feel a little ill just thinking about it.  All in all, I am excited I tried the Juice Austin cleanse, I liked it, and I’m on to eating healthier foods into 2016.  Hurrah for me!  I’m not quite sure if I would leap to a vegan or vegetarian diet, but the foods I eat now are definitely lean/no red meat and lots of veggies with my occasional love of BREAD.  YUMMMMMM.  But, oh, definitely try the vegan foods at Juice Austin, if only to say, “Hey!  Vegan food is QUITE delicious!”
