Beginning readers will love following along with Flat Stanley’s winter adventure.
You know about Flat Stanley, right? No? Well, just in case (and, yes, I do sometimes forget not everyone is as well versed in children’s literature…oops), Flat Stanley is a children’s book character that came out in 1964 (yes, six-four) by the late Jeff Brown. While Brown can no longer write his Flat Stanley books, his legend lives on in many writers who have taken on the task of keeping Stanley and his adventures alive.
Here are a few factoids on Stanley:
- His last name is Lambchop
- He was flattened by a bulletin board on the wall
- He made the best of his ‘altered’ state by being mailed to friends all over the world
- Stanley is known for his world travels and has become a picture icon for traveling kids
In the Flat Stanley: On Ice book, Flat Stanley and his brother, Arthur, are going ice-skating on a frozen lake. Many kids are having fun and Stanley is showing off his moves when all of a sudden the weather heats up and – uh oh! – he is skating on thin ice. Oh no! Luckily, his brother acts quickly and gets help in order to pull Stanley to safety. Whew. It’s a lesson in safety and helping others and the Flat Stanley: On Ice is a Level Two I Can Read book, which is geared for kids who read on their own but still need a little help. Awesome!
