Christmas, to me, is all about the traditions. We make certain foods, we decorate with certain ornaments, we get new Christmas clothes and take holiday pictures. It’s a fun and exciting time when your children start to not only REMEMBER your annual traditions, but REMIND you to do them. Brooke was just telling me last week that the day after Thanksgiving means we will start our nightly ‘dark’ walks to see the glowing and sparkling lights put up throughout our neighborhood. I, of course, remember that is part of our tradition, but was a little surprised that a kindergartner was reminding me to not forget. Ha! I love it!
This year we are adding a new Christmas tradition and it involves Reindeer Dust. It comes from a book by the same name and it is an interactive picture book that engages the imagination through family participation. The book tells the classic tale of how the Reindeer Dust tradition first began. Reindeer Dust is essential for Santa’s trip around the world to deliver toys to children when good ol’ Rudolph’s nose can’t fully light the way. The sparkly reindeer dust not only helps the reindeer ‘sniff’ out homes to visit, they can also see the sparkly brown sugar to help them find their way. Even better, the Reindeer Dust gives the reindeer the must needed energy for strength to continue their global journey. This book was designed with the entire family in mind, and includes an easy recipe (which I put below from the Reindeer Dust website) and poem to be read on Christmas Eve. It’s a fantastically fun new tradition that the whole family can love. Yes, I BELIEVE!
Reindeer Dust Ingredients:
- 2 cups oats for energy
- 1/2 cup bran for strength
- 1/4 cup natural or brown sugar to sparkle
- 15 small cellophane bags
- 15 decorative boxes or bags
Mix together the oats, bran and brown sugar in a medium bowl. Scoop 2-3 Tablespoons of mixture into each cellophane bag. Tie with ribbon. Insert each magical reindeer dust packet into a decorative box or bag. Sprinkle the reindeer dust on Christmas Eve to attract Santa’s reindeer. (cite: reindeerdust.com)
