Women’s Stitching India Tee in Grey (Fashion for Moms, Holiday Recommendation)

We create economic opportunities for survivors and women at risk of human trafficking. Won’t you join us?

Human trafficking is a huge business and in places like India the toll and problem is not only high (an estimated 4 MILLION of mostly women and children are affected) it is also VISIBLE.  Ouch!  India’s sex-slavery and forced labor market is illegal, but it is also GROWING!  Yikes!  Nomi Network is in business to create economic opportunities for survivors and women at risk of human trafficking.  Every item you buy provides jobs for survivors and helps end modern-day slavery through a partnership with a fair trade shop called Freeset.

Freeset is located in Sonagacchi, the largest, most infamous sex district in Kolkata, India. Within a few square miles more than 10,000 women stand in line selling their bodies to thousands of men who visit daily. Many are trafficked from Bangladesh, Nepal and rural India. For others poverty has left them without options. The cries of their hungry children drive them to sell their bodies. Nomi started its partnership with Freeset in 2012 and has since supported over 140 women. Shop or donate to this worthy cause HERE.

I have to recommend a wonderful shirt that is perfect for a holiday gift that is made by Freeset called the Women’s Stitching India Tee in Grey.  The tee is inspired by the Nomi Network’s India sewing program that represents a women’s new beginnings and their journeys to freedom. The tee was designed in New York and made in India.  It is beautiful, meaningful, and made of 100% Organic Cotton.  Give a gift that matters this holiday season!

Nomi1  Who is Nomi?

Nomi Network is named after Nomi, an eight year old girl who was rescued from sex trafficking and now lives at one of Nomi Network’s partner shelters in Cambodia.  Co-founders Diana Mao and Alissa Moore first met Nomi on a visit in 2008, and Supei Liu in 2009.  In Nomi’s home village, she was sexually abused by multiple perpetrators.  She was treated worse than an animal.  Nomi now lives in a special needs group home with eight other girls.  She has physical scars, but also emotional scars from her abuse which will prevent her from ever being able to leave the home and reintegrate back into society.  Nevertheless, Nomi has grown into a beautiful young woman.  At the shelter, she is always the first to greet visitors, and she always does so with a big smile on her face.  She is always the first to comfort girls who are new to the shelter.  Nomi is synonymous with Know Me, Know My Story, Know My Success.™

About the Nomi Network: Nomi Network began with a simple embrace from a young survivor of sexual exploitation in Cambodia named Nomi. The founders of Nomi Network were inspired by her story and named the non-profit organization for her and the millions of women who are vulnerable to sex trafficking. Poverty is a root cause of sex trafficking, and the impoverished village where Nomi lived is a destination for traffickers who prey on vulnerable women.  Working with local rehabilitation homes, social enterprises and other non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in Cambodia and India, Nomi Network assesses capacity and then trains and equips women leaders in these communities to be able to make quality, market ready products.
