Gourmet condiments and foods handcrafted in Austin, Texas. 3x Winner, Best BBQ Sauce
The first time I ate a prickly pear cactus was right here in Austin, Texas. It was in late 2001 and I went to a tiny taco stand that was by my apartment in East Riverside – before East Riverside became a little hipper. It was love at first bite. Like all true cactus species, prickly pears are native only to the Americas although they have been introduced to other parts of the globe. The prickly pear cactus is so well known and loved in Texas that it was designated the official plant symbol of Texas in 1995! The prickly pear cactus is raised commercially and the fruit is sold under the name Tuna and the branches (or pads) are eaten as a vegetable (called nopalito or nopales).
There are few things that can be truly designated as a ‘TEXAS’ thing like the prickly pear cactus. They are a wonderful summertime treat and until I heard of Austin Stellar Sauce’s Prickly Year Hibiscus Vanilla Jelly, I had only eaten the pads of the cacti. Our family was so excited to be able to try the tunas in a light and sweet fruity jelly. Mmmmmm.
Stellar’s Prickly Pear Hibiscus Vanilla Jelly is personally picked by the Stellar company right here in Central Texas at the height of their ripeness. It is made with the prickly pear cactus juice and mixed with the crisp flavors of cucumber and melon inherent to the wild foraged prickly pear. It has a beautiful vibrant red color with a succulent taste. Just like every rose has a thorn, every cacti has its thorns, and once you get past the prickles all you get is sweet deliciousness. We love the jelly on toast, cookies and have even made candy with this delectable sauce.
Ingredients: Cane Sugar, Cactus Pear Juice, Lemon Juice, Pectin
