You Get What You Get (Little Boost) Library Binding
Helping children develop a love of reading and learning, no matter their ability level, is at the heart of what we do at Capstone.
And so it began….. when my then-sweet little toddler (now kindergartner) had her first fit after not getting what she wanted, the first words that flew out of my mouth were, “you get what you get and you don’t throw a fit”. I didn’t say it loudly or rudely, but definitely with conviction. Brooke looked at me for about 20 seconds before she said, “But MOM, I really want (fill in the blank..I think it may have been Cheerios for dinner)”. I was a little disappointed that my message didn’t seem to get across at that moment and I took some time on how I should approach these BIG feelings a toddler has when dealing with ME ME ME and the disappointments of not getting what they want. Clearly, I had to think of a way to get through to her little brain.
After much soul-searching, researching and volunteer work to show Brooke how fortunate she was the message sunk in – for the most part. It isn’t a perfect system. Even at five, Brooke still wants what she wants and can get upset when she can’t get it. The key has been letting her take her time to calm down and the saying, “you get what you get and you don’t throw a fit” has become a family mantra. Capstone Books has come out with an awesome series called Little Boost that is a wonderful way to talk to your kids about teachable moments just like disappointment.
In the book “You Get What You Get”, Melvin throws fit after fit when he doesn’t get what he wants. He clearly must learn how to deal with disappointment. Melvin continues his quest of finding injustice in his life when things don’t go his way until his teacher at school teaches him a new rule. As a student, children are always learning to deal with disappointment throughout their school day and this saying is an easy way to help kids cope and move on from whatever small incident they think is ‘unfair’. Melvin learns to control his behavior at school pretty quickly and his parents adopt this philosophy at home. The book is a great lesson and makes a relevant point about self control that any child can understand. In our life, we can’t always get what we want and this book is a great reminder for kids to be happy and grateful for what they do get – not what they don’t. This title is part of our Little Boost series of picture books, which tackle early life lessons and teachable moments in an entertaining way.
Want more great reads from this series? Another title in the series, Lacey Walker, Nonstop Talker (Little Boost), is hands-down one of my favorites in the series.
