Your Kids: Cooking! A Recipe for Turning Ordinary Kids Into Extraordinary Cooks
A Recipe for Turning Ordinary Kids into Extraordinary Cooks!
“I Hanker for a Hunk of Cheese”
My husband and I fondly remember the “Time for Timer” PSA announcements in the 1970s and 80s where we were told to create “wagon wheels,” sandwiches made with cheese slices and crackers as an easy and nutritious snack. A few decades later, we are still discussing making wholesome foods for our kiddos with the same empowerment twist. Kids can be hands-on and make delicious and healthy foods so your “get-up and go hasn’t gone up and went”.
My husband is quite the chef in our kitchen but he always makes room for our girls. While I am the usual sous chef in the background, Brooke and now Brie have been taught at a young age that preparing food is fun and a skill you can develop. I’d like to think I do my part by finding fun recipes and ways to bring the ‘kitchen staff’ together and I found a great program called Your Kids: Cooking!
Your Kids: Cooking! is a fun and engaging hands-on cooking program for kids. The program has a wonderful, easy-to-read colorful cookbook filled with recipes and melt-in-your-mouth food pictures and a fun DVD. The program is broken down into 10 easy lessons for young chefs to master their cooking skills (over 100!), techniques, and terms along with strategies on preparing healthy meals and snacks. You don’t have to be a master chef yourself to go on this cooking course lesson, Your Kids: Cooking! has a simple yet unique approach with healthy, simple and delicious meals for the whole family.
I love that the Your Kids: Cooking! program focuses on preparing and eating nutritious food. For me, it is important that our girls have confidence in cooking and that they make healthy food choices. Each chapter of the Your Kids: Cooking! program starts with a “recipe-lesson” that starts with the night-before kitchen food preparation and planning so cooking can fit in seamlessly with your routine. While children learn to plan and follow recipes, they also get additional knowledge from the “Test Your Skills!” section as well as the opportunity to reward themselves for a job well done. There are also easy-fix quick recipe instructions for those families who are pressed for time as well as an overview of ChooseMyPlate.gov‘s balanced meal charts. This program has expanded our horizons in what meals the girls can cook as well as increased our cooking time together. That is pretty delicious.
