Adventures in looking at art
The very famous children’s illustrator (who you may recognize as illustrating Roald Dahl books), Sir Quentin Blake, did a unique exhibition at the National Gallery in London in 2001. He chose twenty-six of his favorite paintings that would appeal to children through their very descriptive images that would tell a story. Frances Lincoln has captured this exhibition in book form that encourages children to use their imagination through art with unique illustrations by Sir Quentin Blake himself!
Tell Me a Picture is a beautiful book about art for children that begs the question, “What does this picture say to you?” There is no right or wrong answer since the author is very clear that each person has their own interpretation of art. The illustrated children commentators are given their own page after you and your child have discussed their story for the artwork, so it is fun and doesn’t taint their own ideas. Each painting is arranged in alphabetical order by the artist (from Hendrick Avercamp to Lisbeth Zwerger) and talks in more detail about each work at the end of the book. Without leaving the comfort of your home, you and your child get to tour a wonderful museum and have a unique and interesting lesson in art appreciation. Awesome read!
