Recently my oldest daughter, with a very serious look in her eye, asked me, “Mom, can I be a princess when I grow up?” She’s obsessed with princesses now and I can’t blame her. Marketing for princesses is everywhere and now with all the royal talk of a new princess in England, it is hard to not be enamored. I looked down into her wide eyes and said, “I am sure you would make a lovely princess, but we can’t all be a royal.” “Why?” Well, sometimes we are born to be a bear.
OK, so maybe that last part makes no sense to you now, but it will after you read your child the latest HarperCollins children’s book, Bear and Duck. This book couldn’t have come at a better time and when I read it to Brooke she seemed to get the concept that it is always better to just be yourself.
Bear is tired of being a bear. He thinks that his friend, Duck, has it SO much better. They didn’t have hot fur, or hibernate or get stung in the nose by bees to get lunch. Yes, Bear decided to be a duck. And he tried. He asked Duck on advice on how to be a better duck and he tried to follow all the rules to a t. He tried building a nest, he tried to swim and he even tried to fly. As you can imagine, it didn’t work out quite like he had planned. He would NEVER be a duck!
But, you know what? He decided he preferred climbing trees to flying, taking long winter naps didn’t seem too bad and he did enjoy eating honey – especially with his newfound friend, Duck. Bear decided he was good at being a bear after all and in this acceptance he found his true happiness. I also added, for Brooke’s sake, that “princess crowns are very heavy to wear and you have to always be in the public eye, smile and make speeches. That doesn’t sound so fun does it?” She nodded in agreement. Perhaps this princess phase will not be so difficult after all.
