The Blooming is about a young flower named Bud who is going through a process of his adoption. Bud’s parents wanted to give him a better home since winter was coming soon and made the loving decision to put him in the care of another family. It journeys Bud’s process in finding his forever home that will allow him to bloom. The book is designed to give caregivers a way to talk to kids about the adoption process by using The Blooming as a metaphor.
The Blooming is the tale about foster care and adoption aimed for children ages 2-7. The illustrations in the book are so sweet and the words are gentle and comforting for kids. This isn’t just a book for foster or adopted children, I was surprised at how many questions my oldest daughter had about children who are not raised by their biological parents. The story is actually a very good love story, for caregivers and from the perspective of biological parents, as it demonstrates that things all happened for the betterment of the child. The author, Katie Orbrecht, was adopted herself as a child and realizes the importance of showing the process as a loving event and a healthy perspective for kids. I have to imagine that caregivers will receive many difficult questions from their children and The Blooming offers a beautiful story full of hope and love in the adoption process.
