- Drowning is the second leading cause of accidental death of children under 18 in the US and is in fact, the number one cause of accidental death of children in 18 states. Amazingly, 88% of drowning occur with some type of supervision present.
- Now there is an early warning system that prevents this by alerting parents through their iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch that their toddler has fall into the water, and / or that their older child is submerged for too long.
- The system can send alerts for up to eight swimmers and works at the pool, lake, pond, beach, hot tub, and even the bath tub!

iSwimband Wrist Band vs. Head Band
- iSwimband wrist bands are for new or non-swimmers. It fits on the wrists and sends an alarm if submerged for more than three seconds in water.
- iSwimband head bands are for young swimmers. It fits on the head (almost like goggles) and sends an alarm if submerged for a certain amount of time under water (20 seconds is the recommended setting.)
Brooke is considered a ‘young swimmer’ and we also learned that the iSwimband can also fit on her goggles!

Sensor Compatibility
Right now the sensor for the iSwimBand works with iPhones, iPads and iTouches. iSwimBand is coming out with an Android Version soon!
My Take:
I have to admit I was a little skeptical of getting an iPhone, but it is products like this that make me realize how convenient apps and sensors can be in our world. I hear stories each year of kids drowning, and usually they are close to home or family or friends. Pool parties can be a distraction for little ones, so iSwimBand offers me piece of mind to know that Brooke is a-ok. I certainly don’t intend to not watch her in the pool – now that is just crazy talk- but twenty seconds is not a lot of time when you can get distracted. It’s nice to know that there is a cool device like iSwimbands for us nervous parents!

I cannot stress the value of this band. This weekend my family and I were in Waller, Texas, at Yogi Bear Jellystone Park. A non-swimmer, 3 years old, was pulled out of the water in a pool surrounded by adults and her parents about 30 feet from where we were sitting. She just quietly walked over to the pool, got in and sunk. A man eventually noticed something was not right and pulled her out. She was unconscious and was revived pool side. Fortunately, after EMS arrived and 1.5 hrs later, she was up and talking. This happened in a pool surrounded by at least 35 adults in her immediate presence. Drowning only takes a second and is generally quite. It can happen to anyone. Had this little girl had an iSwimband on in a non-swimmer mode, it would have alerted her parents the second it was submerged in water.
I’m sure we all have stories that can be shared, but with technology like this available, it can sure lower the incidents. It is just another layer of protection, but not the answer to drowning prevention.
