“‘Shake!  Shake your manos!  Move your cabeza!,’  Andrés Salguero might sing at a concert.  This kind of bilingual singing, or performing in two languages, makes sense these days.” — The Washington Post

My preschooler is so fascinated by things like time, dates and the holidays.  She likes to talk about how far things like Halloween and her birthday are from today.  We talk about all the cool new events that happen each month and I thought the release of the Andrés Salguero album ¡Uno, Dos, Tres con Andrés! that happens to honor El Día de los Niños was a great opportunity for learning.  This Spanish/English album was the brainchild of the Colombian musician Andrés Salguero.  Although a native of Colombia, his fun and danceable album incorporates many flavors and sound of Latin America including salsa, bachata, plena, mariachi, vallenato, bolero and champeta.  What fun!

What is El Día de los Niños?  El Día de los Niños or Children’s Day is recognized as a global holiday that was proclaimed at the World Conference for the Well-bring of Children in 1925 as a way to honor children globally.  Columbia, which is the country where Andrés grew up, celebrates the holiday the last Saturday in April.  The United States celebrates the holiday the second Sunday of June.  There are many global holidays dedicated to children including a Universal Children’s Day recognized by the United Nations that is celebrated on November 20, so mark your calendar!

Why is this day important?  As a parent, I support the global welfare, education and empowerment of children.  Universal Children’s Day is not just a day of celebration, it is also for awareness of violence against children in forms of abuse, exploitation and discrimination.

How do you celebrate El Día de los Niños?  Make Children’s Day a special day with your little ones through fun and learning!  Since April marks the Columbian holiday, learning songs that incorporate Spanish and English like this album is wonderful!  Songs like Salta Salta (Jump, Jump) is a fun music and movement song to get your kids up off their feet.  Songs like Daddy Was a Migrant Worker is a great way to talk about migrant families and learn about the country of Columbia as well as learning different words in Spanish.  Why not end the day volunteering at a local school or activity with your child?  Oh, Hola Amigo is definitely my favorite song that talks about different languages children speak all over the world.  As Andrés says in his lyrics, “No me importa cual es to el idioma.”
