Oak Mahogany Ukulele by Schoenhut (Age 6+)
Leader in the World of Toy Pianos Since 1872
This is probably a ‘brag’, but I am super proud that my older daughter loves to sing, dance and play music. We started off showing her how to play drums and keyboard and she is also quite good at bongos. While she has a toy guitar she likes to strum, it doesn’t stay in tune and was a hand-me-down from a friend whose child never played. Brooke has been interested in learning to play a stringed instrument and I thought the guitar would be too complicated as a first stringed instrument. I researched and found a company that has been making instruments for kids since 1872 (wow) and they have an impressive collection of pineapple ukuleles that are perfect as a first instrument for kids.
The Schoenhut factory in Saint Augustine, FL started as a piano company by Albert Schoenhut in New York and his original designs many years ago is now noted for its children’s instruments. The children’s ukulele has four nylon strings (excellent for beginners) with a birch soundboard, hardwood neck and an oak/mahogany finish. Touted as having clear and authentic Hawaiian tones, the ukulele has a beautiful sound and easy for Brooke to strum and try to play. We have found some great videos on YouTube on how to play ukulele for beginners and I am quite happy that my older daughter wants to learn. Schoenhunt also makes vibrant colored ukuleles if you want to go that route although we like the classic look of the oak mahogany model.
