Moodbox Design Frida Doll *Local*

Now Atown Style is what I’m talking about, locals! If you want interesting artistians and vendors from THE Austin, Texas, you must check out ATown Art Gallery. I’m lucky the Atown Art Gallery is close to where I live so I get to check out all kinds of cool stuff and certain items just grab my interest to review for all of you. That latest ‘something’ was the really awesome homemade Frida dolls by Moodbox Design. The brilliance behind Moodbox design is local, Edgar Delgado. By his Frida doll I, of course, mean the Mexican painter, Frida Kahlo de Rivera. Frida was a self-taught surrealist painter who was known for her feminine figures and uncompromising association to the Mexican Revolution in 1910. There are at least 140 known paintings by Frida and the pain and suffering in her art is telling once you know her life experiences (such as a volatile marriage, injuries from a car accident and multiple miscarriages). However, despite all the sadness in her art, she clearly had a huge impact on art as well as feminism. To be able to own a Frida doll and talk to your child about her life and artwork is such a wonderful introduction to Frida and her Mexican heritage. Lucky for me (and all of us Austintines) that we have places like Moodbox Design and Atown that showcase our many talented artists!
Check it out! Locals, did you know that Frida’s Self-portrait with Thorn Necklace and Hummingbird, Nickolas Muray Collection is currently located at the Harry Ransom Center, University of Texas at Austin? No? Then GO SEE IT!
