Families of the World Films are Excellent for Learning about People and Culture Around the World

Germany holds a special place in my husband’s and my heart.  Both our grandfathers were stationed there in the Army and it was where his grandfather met his German-born wife and my father-in-law was actually born in Germany.  Bob and I had the pleasure of visiting the country several years ago and got a great tour of Stuttgart, Munich and Frankfurt and several little cities in between before heading to France.  It was a lovely experience and although we didn’t get to visit family members in the area, it is fun to be able to show our children a glimpse into the lives of families in other countries.

The Families of the World Series already has 28 amazing titles under its belt and it is a great way for families to take a journey around the world to learn about other cultures from a child’s viewpoint.  In fact, the series is narrated by children and always focuses on two children’s families from an urban and rural location to get the different perspectives.  There are limited cuts so it feels very real-world and it’s a nice way for children to see life as it happens in each country for children as young as five (plus a limited 30 minute viewing time – perfect).

The Families of Germany DVD focuses on the story of two children, Ole and Sophia, where one lives in a rural and the other in an urban environment.  Sophia, age 7, lives in a small village of Reimershausen on her parents’ farm and she goes to school with 19 other classmates.  The interesting thing is that school is almost all day and even after dinner, she heads back to school for crafts and skits!  Ole, age 10, lives in the capital of Berlin and both his parents have jobs in the city (one an engineer and the other a teacher at a museum).  His school life is similar to ours in the U.S. (one of his subjects at that young age is English) and he has homework and handball practice during the weekdays.  Overall, the video is a great snapshot for kids about the life of their peers in Germany.  Kids will enjoy seeing the similarities and differences between the two cultures and get a taste of the beautiful landscape of Germany.
