When Daddy Comes Home from War with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder
I have never been to war but combat related post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) still affects my life. The disorder is much more common than you may realize. Studies show that combat-related PTSD in US military Veterans since the Vietnam War range from about 2 – 17% of the population of deployed soldiers. The affects of combat related PTSD goes well beyond the soldier/sailor/airman/Servicemember and bleeds into all aspects of a Veterans life, especially their family. My older daughter is still a preschooler and although I’ve broached the subject in a very light way I do realize a lot of things about PTSD are over her head. My own observations of PTSD are that it can seem to come out of nowhere, can be confusing to understand the triggers and hard to diffuse. Children need to understand that PTSD is not their fault and if a trigger with PTSD happens to their parents (or grandparents) they are not to blame. The book, Only Daddy’s Dog, is the first children’s book that I have read that truly touches on this delicate subject to help a child whose parent has PTSD understand the process.
Only Daddy’s Dog is a story of a child who has a dad who has combat related PTSD and is given a service dog as therapy. Written by a psychiatric social worker, this book touches on the Canines for Combat Veterans program from the National Educational for Assistance Dog Services. The program started in 2009 and service dogs are given to Veterans with PTSD with encouraging results to help them cope with symptoms of the disorder. Not only does this gentle book explain about why a parent has PTSD, it also offers support as well as funding to help those who suffer from the disorder. Excellent source of encouragement!
