A Child’s Christmas in Wales [Hardcover] (All Ages)
A Modern Classic in Lyric Pose by the Great Dylan Thomas
Not all children’s books have to be brand new to keep a child’s interest. In fact, if you look back at the greats in children’s literature, very little is in modern times. If you have never heard of the late Dylan Thomas, I highly recommend getting this children’s book based on the original piece Thomas wrote for a radio program and recorded by the author in 1952. The recording became so popular since it evoked many nostalgic Christmas holidays for people not just in Wales, but here in the United States. His joyful memories and exaggerated characters captured an audience and his unique non-narrative style of writing captured a new audience across the pond. Where else would you hear phrases like “deadly snowballs”, “blue knuckles” and snow that “grows overnight on the roofs of houses”? This book can also be purchased on audio through other sources and I highly recommend hearing the book in the poet’s own words. Truly enchanting!
About Poet Dylan Thomas (1914-1953): Born in Wales, Thomas died at the early age of 39 while doing a poetry reading tour in New York with the death certificate citing pneumonia. While he lived a short life, he made a great impact on many authors, poets and musicians; most notably Bob Dylan (whose birth surname was Zimmerman).
