Fresh Take on Traditional Songs

When I first heard this album, “15 Songs Every Kid Should Know”, I thought that was a little gutsy.  I probably know thousands of songs (well, it’s a guestimate anyway..) and I think I’d have a hard time narrowing down even 10 songs I should know and I have lots of favorites.  What is this magical CD that will tell me what Brooke and Brie should grasp musically at a young age?  I had to know!

I have to admit that “15 Songs Every Kid Should Know” is a wonderful take on very important traditional children’s music in the United States.  In fact, you probably know each one of the songs by heart.  However, there is a huge difference, these traditional songs are not done in the classical way, oh no, they feature many different styles of music, including; Cajun, Bluegrass, Rockabilly, Jazz, Irish, Roots, African Drumming, Cuban, Soul, Funk and Folk.  Intrigued?  Definitely.  Bossy Frog Productions brought back so many unique memories as Brooke and I happily listened and tapped our way through this CD.  I was able to tell her some great memories I had in learning the songs, like how I associated ‘Froggie Went A Courtin’’ with going to the doctor since my mom sang it to us on the LONG drive (remember, I lived in the boondocks) for the visit.  Of course, ‘I’ve Been Working on the Railroad’ was always known in our house since my grandfather spent many decades working for the good ol’ B&O.  This is a fun album and I will definitely be playing it a lot especially for my younger daughter, Brie, who will need to master the Itsy Bitsy Spider actions to match the song to keep up with her older sister!
