Gifts for Drummers and All Musicians

My daughter loves percussion.  LOUD drumming and banging makes her happy and she actually has some decent rhythm on her bongo set and small drum kit (sans the throne).  Claves (pronunciation: clah-vays) are a great percussions instrument to add to a child’s collection for its rhythmic learning as well as the importance of resonation.  Primarily used in Latin music (particularly in Cuba) you won’t see a lot of really nicely made claves for children and this set is made of REAL wood.  Yes!  This set is also made in the traditional length at approximately 8.5” in length.  The main technique used (which I think it a little easier for kids) is to hold onto the clave with the thumb and on top of the fingertips (with the non-dominant hand) with the palm up while holding the other like a drumstick and striking it with the other clave around the center. It definitely takes practice, but it is an age-appropriate way for us to incorporate more music into our daughter’s life.  Two thumbs (or should I save claves?) up!

Check it out!  Drum Bum has an entire online catalog section such for kids’ instruments here!  We started out with our oldest daughter on bongos and a child’s percussion table and now she can ‘play’ a children’s drum kit.  Really fun.

  1. This is such a cute idea! My son’s music class ended for the year today, so this would be a fun idea to keep some of the music exercises going at home.

  2. Too cool! I actually spent most of yesterday’s trip to the grocer telling my son “Not everything is a drum” because he kept drumming beats on everything.
